My dads horse has recently had an absess, they had to hack away the best part of his hoof.
Is there any supplement we could give him to speed up growth??

Thanks

Supplements may affect the quality of the hoof which grows back, but I don't think they really have that much affect on the rate. You may find once the fresh grass comes in etc it may grow back quicker.

What were you told to do management wise with it?

Cornucrescine was always recommended for good for hoof growth. Certainly made my nails grow and we always used it when there was any hair loss as it encouraged faster growth! You put it at the top of the hoof near the coronet band.

Horn growth is similar to hair growth. If you rub cornucresine in to the coronary band, just above the hoof, it does seem to stimulate the blood flow leading to increased hoof growth. I have been told eucalyptus oil or vicks vapour rub will have a similar effect

Any thoughts?

Feeding biotin certainly improves the quality of the horn growth - it may have some affect on rate of growth. Am personally not that convinced about topical treatments. The equine hoof wall is an extension of the skin, and have heard that topical treatments may actually retard hoof growth.

Still think you should stick with what ever management you were advised to do by the vet/farrier who dug out the abscess.

My girl also had abscess recently and generally her hoof growth has been slow this winter; farrier recommended feeding Farriers Formula or Formula4Feet to help growth/ improve horn; also was advised to keep foot padded/ protected for a number of days (e.g. he said to use a sponge stuck with some duck tape under the sole which I have done for 10 days after he trimmed the feet) this may depend on how much of hoof has come out mine 'only' had a small hole in the sole.

I run an equine supplements business and we have a product called Farriers Favourite. It is now recommended by numerous farriers who have seen how good the product has worked. The one thing our customers also report is how quick the new growth works down. It is a very effective, high spec hoof supplement but is much cheaper than Farriers Formula, Cornuccresine etc. For more info go to www.equineanswers.co.uk

Are you saying that feeding this supplement will increase the rate of horn growth?

Any good balancer or feeding regime will help - get the nutrition right and the growth should follow. Blue Chip, Top Spec, Farriers Forumula anything like that should help.

I have been told that whilst Cornucresine may increase growth, the new growth will be less strong.

Was it just sole they hacked away, or did they have to remove part of the wall too?
