Hi there, anyone know what causes a red line around top of hoof wall? Recently bought new horse who was in a bit of a state, he'd been out on paddock rest for a few months, put a lot of weight on and had his shoes taken off. His red line was also red.

As soon as I got him I stabled him and treated him as if he had lami, got a diet plan sorted with lami trust. He was not lame or in any pain despite his arthritis also. I have been turning him out at night and bringing him in during the day now since thurs.

I'm not sure if this is lami or not?

Do you think the redness is due to him having his shoes off?

Are the feet white? If they are it is likely to be bruising. You normally cant see it if the hoof is black.

I'd say the chances are it's due to LGL (low grade laminitis) I'm afraid. Don't forget though that what has grown down in the hoof is the past. The bleeding stays red because it is inside the horn and not exposed to air, it doesn't mean it is fresh. Flare also contributes due to prizing forces but flare often accompanies LGL in my experience.
I'd say you are safest restricting grass intake as you are doing and see how he goes. Any footyness imo will be best treating as LGL first imo. It may well be he needs less grass long term. Also as advice from lami trust I'm sure you've got, feed only low/nil sugar feed if he has to be feed concentrates and high forage (hay) diet. Good luck.

Oh just to add the reason the redness is visable (as teddyt said) is because the feet are white if they're black you can't see it even if it is there.

Have you had a farrier to look yet? Really is the most sensible option
