Hello
Long story short on the 30th we got the vet out for horse as he was very footsore and she found a corn infection so now on boxrest and bandaged- She has spoken to the farrier and has told us; if the farrier thinks the infections gone he will put his front shoes back on(this weekend) and they have a some sort of care mangement cause hes feet dont seem to be growing, but anyway after hes done that he can only be walked around in hand for the next 5/6 weeks (aka when the farriers next due out) in the arena because anymore work will make things worse.
Now don't get my wrong im not denying anything the vets saying and im no expect but 5/6 weeks cause of a small injection seems a bit long? specialy if the farrier thinks its cleared up enough to shoe?
Just wanted to see others opinions
thank you x

I would have thought once the infection has gone (must be like an abscess so treated as one) then the farrier would replace the shoes taking care to either dig the corn area so the hoof doesnt press on it or place the shoe in such a way that it doesnt press on the corn, once this is done and if the horse is sound then carry on as normal. Corns do seem to happen when shoes have been on too long though or if the balance isnt right and the corn has been irritated so check this for future ref.

the vet thinks he may off got it when lost a shoe and then obviously unnoticed when was being shod so was shod over it, yet as you said once hes sound can carry on which is why i thought 5/6 box rest after shoeing would be a bit strange x

Ask your farrier tomorrow. They know FAR more about feet than any vet. Seems rather extreme to be on box rest for a further 6 weeks. Does he need a decent hoof supplement in his feed? It will still take time for the hoof to grow however, good luck. :)

Ill have a word with him :) hes on boitin but will get some farriers formula as suggested by many people :)
just wanted too see if i was the only person that thought the amount of box rest was a bit much
thanks x
