Hi chaps

Tonight I noticed a white chalky horizontal line at the hairline of my mini shetties front hooves ... One front hoof is also chipped at the bottom. Just done some research online and it appears that this is caused by dry hooves and hoof oil is recommended.

I am a bit overwhelmed by the many diff types of hoof oil out there ... What do u chaps use for dry hooves?

Thanks ever so much

Ems (and Gilda the shettie!)
Xx

Thanks chaps. Is it the Kevin Bacon dressing or formula that you chaps use? Or is it just any Kevin bacon hoof stuff does the job? Sorry for the inane questions. First time owner here!

Our farrier advised only to use hoof oil for shows and said that hoof moist is better for daily/regular use. Have heard Kevin Bacon range is very good though.

Our farrier always says not to use oils, dressings etc on dry hooves, but to allow the water trough to overflow so that the horses hooves get plenty of moisture that way.

Another vote for Kevin Bacon. I'm not sure which one it is but its in a round red tub, green hard paste type thing! :)

my horses hooves were exactly the same :) my farrier recommended hoof grease and it has really made a huge difference to his feet. if your keeping your horse in a field then grease is a much better option because it won't come off if the field is wet or rubbed off by the grass :)

Kevin Bacon every time - get it straight from your farrier as it works out cheaper. Green paste in a red tub and apply sparingly with a sponge. Lasts ages (unless your dogs eat it - mine love it so I have to keep it on a really high shelf!)

Feet are causing problems a lot in our area at the moment - I guess it depends where you live in the country but we've had wet then dry then wet then dry for a while now which is causing hooves to dry out and crack. Had to get farrier out a week earlier and he came yesterday - he told me he's getting loads of calls from everyone with the same problem.
