Hi, I have got a TB with very poor feet, they are very weak and crack in the summer months. Any idea what is best to use on them to stop this happening?
rather than putting something on the feet - try changing the feed - I found that adding alfa a or alfa oil to the diet improved my last horses feet no end..

agree - my farrier has always said not to bother with hoof oil etc, but to feed well, lots of grass and exercise and regular attention from the farrier obviously! of course it wont hurt to put good quality stuff on.
My farrier suggested 'Seaweed and Rosehips' supplement (I think it's made by Equus Health) as it contains biotin etc - a 3kg bag costs about £16.50 and is worth every penny as my horses' feet are so much better, including the laminitic 30-yr old.
The hoof has a very delicate moisture balance - between the outrside of the hoof wall and the laminae - it;s there to act as a fluid damper to absorb and dissipate shock. Oils disturb this - so dpn't use them.
You can not fix cracks as such, you can only grow them out.
So make sur ethe hooves get wet, if the ground is dry try to just give them a hose or provide a pool in the field.
For good hoof friendly feeding information go to the UKNHCP frum - there is a lot of good well tried information in there.
Another vote for biotin, it worked miracles on my horse's feet.
When I first got him he had very poor feet, they were very dry and constantly cracking and he had very poor growth and so he kept losing shoes.
A friend recommended using biotin so added just a scoop per day to his feed and his feet now grow much healthier with no cracks or splits and (touch wood) he hasn't lost a shoe in months-awesome stuff!
