Horses all had a trim today. As trimmer was working away, we saw this (top left of hoof as u look at the pic, in white line area (ish) ):

It wasn't bleeding as such. What is it? Is it a bruise? Trimmer didn't seem concerned but i was worried that maybe too much had been taken off? But then again, that would surely show in more areas?
Opinions greatly appreciated :)

Not sure what that is. Would I be happy with the trim anyway? Nope. Too aggressive for my taste based on that pic.

It looks like a bruise to me, I wouldn't worry about it, bactakil is a great spray which will kill any infection if there is any there and is good for the frog too :)

I was thinking the same thing myself :( She had grown a lot of wall since her last trim cos she's out of work with the keratoma, but i was still a bit shocked at the amount taken off. This is my second trimmer - wasn't happy with the last one... stress :(

The bruise is no big deal - it was likely to be an old knock at the coronet band, there are no blood vessels in the middle of the hoof wall where the colouring is, it's come from somewhere else and down from the coronet is the first guess.

BUT - I'd be VERY unhappy with where height has been removed from the back of the frog, I cannot think of any time I would ever expect to see frog removed from there. Pictures can be deceptive but the heels do look as if they have been taken right to the very max. That might be right for the horse or it might not. I would not expect to see heels cut that low if it also required height taken off the frog to allow for it.

Is the horse as sound now as it was before the trim.

These are pre-trim if they're any help??

She has had thrush and a rather stretched white line, so was Cleantrax'ed just over a week ago. Off to leahurst next week for an MRI. I just so want her feet to be 'right' cos i know the vets are going to tell me to put heartbars back on :(
She didn't look any lamer than she already is, but i didn't stay with her very long after the trim. Will see tomorrow.
Thank you all though. Think i need to start looking again... :(

I have seem to miss this out. Did she have a op for the keratoma?? Beau been shod today he had a little bit of bruises farrier wasn't worried. I can't comment on the trim as I don't know that much about feet. Hope you find another trimmer soon.

Other than probably needing a slightly more rigorous thrush routine (or change in diet) and work to stimulate the frog to de contract a little more they are nice feet,

Bojangles, no not yet. Having an MRI to confirm it, then the op. It's causing too much lameness to wait for it to grow out :(

Poplarfurball, she is on balanced minerals, but is out of work atm. She lives out and we go for inhand walks on tarmac daily, but that is all. We'll get there....
Oberon, I'll reply to your pm when Im at a computer later. Can't do it on my phone :)

I Take it doesnt show up on xrays enough?? I didn't think it could grow out?? Just get bigger and cause problems. Hope op goes ok Beaus four months box rest now.

There is a suspicious shadow on xray, but hopefully an mri will show more.
Apparently some can grow out, but i don't know how long it would take. Thank u for the good luck - we need it :) Good luck with yours too x

It is deep-seated thrush, but i have Cleantrax'd it and done White Lightning soaks, as well as addressing her diet and using every other thrush treatment on the market. She is lame on this foot due to a keratoma, but Im sure the thrush doesn't help matters. It's getting better though.

The keratoma, I take it they are have yet to confirm the diagnosis?

I'm sorry its isn't clear enough on xrays that you have to go for mri scans too. I think I was lucky as Beaus show up very good on xrays!! It was pushing into his pedal bone. Beau doing really well thanks. Walking out in hand now for a hour just cant wait till he can go out!! Keep updates coming too. Which vets are you going to for the op?

Her X-rays have been sent to leahurst and they agree with my vets' keratoma theory, but want to MRI before they slice 'n' dice! There's a 'notch' next to the pedal bone on X-ray, like a shadow, and this is where they think it is. it has also caused a distorted white line area ( the vet had a little dig around of that bit, hence the hole in her foot!) That coupled with the chronic lameness of that foot - there's definitely something wrong somewhere. I just hope it IS a keratoma, cos at least there's high hope of her coming sound once it's out....

Bojangles, god I don't envy you. I'm dreading the walking out bit. I already take her out for a couple of miles a day, and it bores the life out of me!! She's a good girl though :)
Do you have pics of yours?

Aww bless you both!! I've done a thread on his need to update it now as the hole is so much smaller now!! Beau was / is prone to foot abscess in that foot and that foot did have a odd shape to it too. Will have a look and see if I've got before photos. He did have a really bad strech white line on the outer part of his foot. It also show up on the sole when his foot was prep for shoeing my new farrier suggest it was a keratoma and got xrays. Now it all explains the foot abscess!! When is the mri being done??

I'm still waiting for leahurst to phone me with an appointment, but hopefully some time next week. The sooner the better!
The thing is that once my vet had dug, she said there was nothing 'keratoma-ry', so it's possible that it's not one. Nothing's simple with my horses!!
Yes, post an update! :)

Fingers crossed for you both! I wasnt aware of beau until I changed farriers. My vet said that it had been there for some time and as the foot grow down it show itself!! In the same spot where all his abscess had came out at too.
