Best friends bro is a farrier, so it has been drummed into me from an early age that hoof picking is one of the most important rituals of a routine. Bruce gets his hooves picked at leat once a day, gives me an opportunity to run my hands down his legs and check for injury etc, as well as checking hooves/shoes.

How often do you pick out your horses feet? TRUTH now!

every 6weeks

Not every day, probably 2-3 times/week. Actually, some schools of thought say you shouldn't do it at all???????

At my yard we do ours after they come off the walker, before being ridden and at the end of the day after coming in! Been a bit of a shock to the system the amount I spend doing feet now. We also try and scrub and wash them out every week as well!

Twice a day......do you think I'm obsessed? Seriously though a woman at our yard takes up her two dozen (seems like it anyway!) dogs who crap all over the place and horsey can't but help stand in said crap!

before i ride, usually every day. (he's lame atm so only do them when i bring him in for a groom) also after i've ridden on rocky tracks. he gets oil in his feet twice a week, so they get scrubbed before that. he had rubbish feet though, so i've got to take extra care xD which is annoying, because he's terrible at having his feet picked up.

FF , I'm with you on this one

I pick my mares feet out twice a day when she's stabled at night and once a day the rest of the time

Farrier does mine

ets: mine all live out 24/7and are barefoot so they're not stood in wee/poo at all. They fill with dirt and fall out in hoof shapes

I pick them out before I ride, so at least 5 times a week. I also pick them out if I've been in a stoney place or in mud then walked over gravel.

I voted never, but it's not quite never - only when the farrier comes. She is barefoot and turned away though. The horses at the yard have theirs done at the very least once a day, and every time they set hoof outside of their stables (to keep the yard tidy).
I posted a poll about hoof picking in the stable yard forum a month or two ago and got some very interesting replies. Including one who said that as their horses are barefoot and out 24/7 they don't pick out feet on the farrier's reccomendation as it just irritates the sole. Or something along those lines. So I thought I'd try it out with my mare when I turned her away and she's had no problems so far. Farrier due tomorrow morning though so we shall see!

Barefott companion pony - two or three times a week as he lives out so they don't tend to get too pongy!

Comp horse - after mucking out in the morning, before work, after turnout - everyday! I'm officially obsessed!

Living out so not stood in poo..... so dont really bother much... everytime i pick them up they are clean so nothing needing doing..... had farrier check that my negligence isnt causing any problems and he says not!!!

Before and after riding and always when they come in at night. I'm on part livery and it's the one thing that makes me really arsey if it's not done but having had horse with iffy feet found it pays to look after them

QR.
Six horses & bad back.......simply can't do them all every day!! They get done in rotation - as many feet as I can manage each day & always before being ridden. If anything has a problem that receives attention as often as required but I use the Kevin Bacon thrush treatment at the recommended maintenance level, so don't get many of those.

Maddy is unshod and arthritic and really hates picking up her feet, so has hers done only about 3 times a week. Flash has his done every day

2/3 times a day before and after rides

it prevents thrush if you cclean your horses feet
or can prevent lameness

picking out a horses foot on a daily basics you can detect changes in the foot -- to wether its needs vet care or extra farrier care
ie laminitus --
picking out your feet is also bonding with your horse the same as grooming is

Both mine get thier feet picked out in the morning and again in the evening before i ride.

if ive hacked them out they then get them picked out again after hacking as its stoney where i am so quite often there are little stones wedged in.

Ive always been taught to pick out a horses feet before it leaves the stable, and when you bring it in from the field.
