I’m finding my mare’s hooves changing very interesting and thought I’d share.
Timeline:
- she arrived with dealer July, with “very overgrown feet” (I have no pics). Dealer had her trimmed.
- I bought her early August.
- Had her trimmed by farrier at that yard mid august - wish I hadn’t as apprentice did it and rasped away all the flare, compromising her hoof wall. But hey ho.
- Moved her to new yard mid august
- Early Sept had new yard’s farrier look at her feet, just to do some practice with her as she wasn’t great with having her feet handled initially. He took barely anything off at all.
- Bought myself a radius rasp and just been tidying them up round the edges periodically.
- Been walking her out on the roads a bit - not as much as I’d like for various reasons.
She went quite footy at new yard for a bit, possibly to do with the hoof wall having been rasped away. I bought her boots to keep her comfy, but once she was more comfy I’ve been walking her out on the road without them. She now walks over the rubble surface in the field gateway happily. She’s developed toe calluses which I expect will disappear once some stronger hoof wall has grown down.
Anyway the change in her hooves just in the last two weeks is crazy (see first two comparison pics), but I’ve included a pic of her hooves from the week I got her, to now, too, for comparison.
Any observations welcome, although I’m not looking to do anything radically different, I think she mainly just needs time and patience, good nutrition, and not too much fiddling with them. Could really do with getting out more to condition them further.
Pics of fronts only, might try and do hinds later if I get time.
