I had a friend pick up a horse I bought that I had see as a 3 year old. (now 4)
She was sore when I picked her up a month later and he said she never runs around, just is either very quiet or sore. So we x-rayed and she has mild to moderate navicular, sidebone on both feet and pedalostitis on the left. The previous owner (paid plenty for this mare to show) says he doesn't believe my vet, that the mare was never lame - yet she is very green broke. He admits he hardley ever rode her, but he is also a top judge and blacksmith so find it impossible to believe he didn't know. Any suggetions?

I'd be worried that your friend had her a month and didn't think to mention it by the sounds of your post? If that was the case then makes me wonder if she has been lame that time or not?

Was an advert written for the horse? If it was they might be able to prove the horse is not as described, if he was a judge and blacksmith I find it hard to believe he didn't know and if he bought it to show why did he decide to sell it?

I was out of the country for a month after he picked her up. She was just turned out during the daytime and in stall at night, not rode. The vets (3 of them) said these are not something that happened in the last month, and that there is not much chance of the mare not showing lameness. As a world class judge he would have seem that - even my farrier said he would have seem something.

I'm sorry but I don't understand.

Who bought this mare?

From whom?

At what age?

How long ago?

Was it vetted prior to sale?

Was it ridden by the prospective buyer prior to sale?

I bought the mare in March. I had seen her last spring ( 3 year old). Owner was leaving so only has a couple minute to ride the horse, and other than being green, seemed fine. I was out of the country but found she was still for sale. Talked repeatedly with owner (judge/farrier) who told me she was sound/but green as he didn't have a lot of time for her. She was now 4, but figured I could finish her and show her and talked to him about this too. He said she'd have no trouble picking up points. My friend picked her up for me and I picked her up when I got home last month. Vet was contacted and came out first to check her, then a few days later for the x-rays.
