Firstly stop using the hoof oil, seedy toe is an infection of sorts and the oil will only serve to seal it in. If you MUST put something on the feet then eucalyptus oil has both hardening and antifungal properties. Much better than Keratex, which is what they preserve dead bodies with, and half the price.

Then go to the website for UK Natural Hoofcare Practitioners. You may have no urge to go barefot but the advice they give on diet etc is the way forward IMO, what does your farrier advise you to do?

farrier has advised to clean it out with some sort of disinfectant !
ive only had him just over 2 weeks when he came to me he had just lost the shoe on that foot and they were going to wait untill he had another shoe put on as it was very sore and he couldnt walk far,but i told them to bring him and i got the farrier the next day and once shoe was on he was fine.
it is only on the one hoof bless him but it just doesnt look nice he is 21 and has typical warmblood feet he also suffers from foot rott in the winter, thank you for your advice and i will try the eucalyptus oil

Hydrogen peroxide (the bleach without the colours, scents etc of a household cleaner) and a toothbrush!!

Its about 70p a bottle from the chemist, dip toothbrush in the stuff and scrub affected areas once a day - it fizzes away and kills any bugs....

Is doing a great job on my boy (where old over reaches have grown down and got bugs inside, so were begining to turn into white line disease, causing hoof wall to separate etc)

Not an instant fix as it takes a while for infected hoof to grow out once you have killed off all the bugs... after 1 month of daily use, it was looking much better - hoping it will be virtually gone next time he is shod!

Its good for thrush too (in horses hooves that is!!)

I would get this dealt with properly and quickly. I don't want to scare you but my previous horse had seedy toe and it ate away under the hoof capsule as my ex-farrier decided to leave it, he ended up having a section of his hoof removed with a 'Dremel' tool, special shoe fitted that protected the exposed bit of foot and iodine swabs packed in it to keep infection out.
Seedy toe is caused by an anerobic bacteria (doesn't need air to survive) so it needs to be exposed to kill it
It took 6months for the hoof to grow down, he then succumbed to Lami in the 'good' foot and had to be PTS as pedal bone dropped so much, prob due to the extra stress that the 'good' foot was put under.
This is obviously worse case scenario but it scares me when people mention seedy toe, it can be serious so please consult an expert.
Hydrogen peroxide is great for bacteria but it also damages good tissue as well. Please speak to your farrier (if he's any good?) or vet, best to deal with it early as poss.
I hope you don't think I'm scare mongering, just had a very sad experience and it could have been prevented.

I agree with sneedy! My boy had a split in the bottom of his hoof that just would not heal, farrier took good look and found evidence of seedy toe,the top layer of the hoof was cut away to expose the infection, was only about an inch and a half of hoof cut away,he sprayed this with strong antiseptic and i was told to keep clean, pack with stockholm tar to prvent muck travelling up hoof as it was winter and we had shitty fields!Came again cut more out and packed with a special putty!Did trick!I would suggest clean feet and plenty of antiseptic spray after discussing with farrier first obviously

Purple spray won't do any harm, wouldn't have thought you need it tho as I doubt anything will get passed Stockholm tar! Keep an eye on the depth of the hole and it gets bigger then consult farrier again or vet as that part of the hoof will prob need removing to get air in and kill the bacteria. I was unlucky as was quite naive about seedy toe and by the time the vet was involved the 'what looked like a small hole' actually nearly reached the coronet band, the bacteria had been munching away quite happily under the hoof wall, unbeknown to me!! Good Luck!

Cool, that'd be good to see. Wil's hole was at the front of his foot and the huge hole was under the hoof capsule so couldn't see it but could stick a nail up it, so the bugs had had a field day...greedy bu**ers!!
