Somehow, goodness knows how, one of our jumping ponies came out of the ring yesterday and was lame within 10 mins. Something has impacted on the side of her hoof wall on the outside of a foreleg, just below the coronet band. She has a small cut to the coronet and an indentation of about 5mls deep just below, about the size of a 5p piece. It looks as though something has impacted directly on the hoof wall and just cut into the coronet bad.

She is still slightly lame today having had a sachet of bute last night and one again this morning. She's also sore when the inpact area is touched. I've flushed it out thoroughly and put antibiotic cream into it, but should I poltice? Is there any reason not to there? I'm concerned that infection was introduced at the point of damage though at the moment I know that the pain was from the injury rather than infection as it came on so quickly after it happened.

Any thoughts appreciated.

ya plotice it just in case any thing manged to get in there keep her mobile and give her some arnica tablets o help with the brusing!

If you have a hydrotherapy spa nearby you could pop her in one of them. The cold would help to relieve any pain, stimulate blood flow (thereby allowing healing to occur), draw out any infection if there is any there and bring down any swelling.

Failing that ice it.

We just had a polo pony nearly take off its heel in the lorry very big emergany damaged the coronet band nothing like the sound of yours but do watch out for extra growth if around the heel area. Because if the coronet band is damaged the hoof may grow quicker or slower than before more regular farrier checks may be needed. I would poltice it bring out anything that might be in their with a hot poltice to start with to draw it out then cold after a day to bring down swelling etc if nothing coming out. Keep her moving and even cold hose to help swelling hope a fast and full recovery. x

Thanks everyone for very helpful responses, and to Crazyhorse for news of how their similar injury went.

She is now completley sound, thank goodness, and farrier isn't concerned about future growth issues. I got nothing out with the poltice and so am putting a gel I got from the vet on to help the incision/small hole heal.

Always good to know there's folks out there for urgent advice when it's needed! Thanks guys
