Hoof wall separation disease

Hi all,

i was wondering if anyone had any ideas about Connemara ponies and HSD. I was wondering if a gelding is a carrier of HSD but is not affected by it could be predisposed to other hoof issues in the future? I don’t have much experience of HSD, I know it’s a genetic issue and many other issues such as laminitis may not be but would it have the potential to cause other issues in later life?

No, carriers are fine
you only get expression with two copies of the gene
so if definitively only a carrier, and you have seen paperwork to prove that, then no more likely to have foot issues than any other horse
