Been having a look on the internet and see that some sites suggest that hoofboots can help ponies/horses that have/have had laminitis and wondering whether anyone has had any experience with them? Can you put them with shoes to give added protection? Would they be suitable for a pony that does a lot of trotting?

Our 18 year old driving pony has been diagnosed with mild laminitis - we have had shoes taken off and has frog supports on and is on box rest. Farrier has said that pony has very flat feet and thin soles (said they are more like what you would expect on a thoroughbred).

Thanks

Ive only worn hoof boots over shoes when my pony has had an abcess, to protect the sole, i dont see any advantage of wearing boots over shoes, is it possible your pony has concussion laminitis with lots of trotting?

The flat and thin soles will improve with diet and stimulation. Ensuring pony is free from metabolic disorders (EMS/Cushing's) then look hard at the diet and ensure minerals are balanced to forage as much as possible.
Boots are a great tool to aid comfort but they aren't the whole answer.
You can use them over shoes, although it wound't be necessary with healthy hooves.
There is a boot bible thread on the Phoenix forum for barefoot horses if you want to look.

Thanks for the replies. Sorry ignore my question can they be used on a pony that does a lot of trotting - this is not what we would want them for - was thinking they would give him a littler more comfort in the early stages of his recovery. Obviously he wouldn't be brought back into any kind of work again until sound and therefore wouldn't require boots.

Boots can be a good tool to use to allow a horse to get back to work (which is always beneficial) while the hooves are still remodeling and not yet strong enough to go it alone.
They can just provide that extra comfort and confidence.
If they are used initially, they can help the hooves move forward more quickly.
