Morning guys...

just wondering, what hoof oil do you use in the summer and winter? and why? i use effol in winter and hoof moist in hot summer however when its wet i dont use any at all as she gets really soggy feet sometimes. bit of a general post really!

If I use anything it tends to be Kevin Bacon's - but then only if the weather has been particularly dry.

Are you a believer in water is best for hoofs? i do believe that to an extent but then she gets soggy feet and i use the effol as its a grease.

hoof oil should be banned.
why seal the hoof and stop it from breathing and absorbing moisture?
if it is very dry and no dew i walk pony in stream.
my ponies have great hooves and the few people i know who use hoofoil have nothing but trouble in that department.

Absolutely. I very rarely used anything on Amy's feet - but bought the Kevin Bacon's as I thought that maybe I should.

But to be honest I think that as as long as you have a good basis to work from - then there's nothing better than wet grass to keep them right.

bedding and school surfaces can also dry feet out.
have you seen what happens to hoof clippings from the farriers visit if left for a few days?they curl up and shrink.so hooves need moisture and by applying a coating of hoof oil it prevents this by sealing the hoof therefore making them brittle/crumbly.

Yep i agree, hoof oil is horrendous stuff. They need moisturising in some cases though, my boy is out over night, and on semi deep litter bedding which i have been informed helps as the bed isnt so drying, ut still has crap feet! KB stuff really does help, as it soaks in and doesnt create a barrier for moisture.

I never use hoof oil, ever! (Apart from at shows to make them their tootsies look pretty! lol)

Hooves need moisture? Water! A good soaking with the hose & lots of playing about in water is effective....& free!

Sec B's feet are naturally rubbish & the only stuff I put on them if I need to is Cornucrescine, scrubbed into the top of his hooves with a toothbrush, as recommended by the farrier! (Seems to work!)
