Hooray! I passed + a rude question about money

I passed with 7 minors. Hurray! Nearly failed for hesitation but nice examiner said I could have the benfit of the doubt as he could tell I was only like it because I failed for the opposite on the first test. Hurrah. Lovely man. I nearly hugged him.


And now my rude question...

I don't have a 4x4 or a trailer, just a license as of today. How did you guys finance buying these rather expensive items? I already have a bank loan for the car I sold to buy my horse so I'm not sure I can take another one out really. Or rather I could but I won't so I think I'll just be waiting until the one I have is all paid off before starting another. I have just spent £1000 on learning to tow which is more than my horse cost so rather a lot of money to me!!

How long did you all wait and how did you eventually scrape together the money?
 
I know of a few trailer for sale under £500. Old, but safe and working well. Maybe a bit of cosmetic work to do. So shouldn't take too long to save for. Maybe ebay loads of things you don't use - I just made voer £400 on ebay selling a few rugs, boots, bits etc that I don't use any more.

No idea about 4x4s I'm afraid - I just borrow my Dads as I don't want the running cost of such a big vehicle and can't afford my car and a 4x4
 
go onto the 4 x 4 forums to see what they say about different cars, then have a look on autotrader to see where you stand in terms of money needed. There are loads of posts on here about running costs but you can at least get an idea of insurance etc. Rough idea would be say something on the lines of Jeep - short wheel base, petrol, 3.7 engine, 70000 miles 52 reg - @ £3K

In terms of finance - if you get your credit expert report you can see what would be creditors would but realistically? - better to get an idea of how much money you would need to put together and then start selling on ebay/saving up - over committing yourself financially is never a good idea! i second the ebay iv just got a trailer but no 4x4 i just borrow one, i got it through selling loads of stuff on ebay like tack, clothes etc that i dont use and worked extra hours to make some more and then i got a tax rebate which helped :D i think if you want something enough you will find a way of getting it! :p

Unfortunately I sold nearly everything I own to take the blooming lessons! They're so dear.

I wish I could borrow a car as the trailer part seems utterly attainable. It is definitely the vehicle side of things which is daunting!

I think I will just have to save hard for a few years. Maybe I have a doting maiden aunt somewhere out there who would like to give me some money. Seems hugely unlikely though I think.
 
Some of the old Landrovers go for well under 10k andas for trailers some of the good second hand ones do go cheap especially in the current market.

When we needed a new trailer due to the size we put some money aside a month and started a trailer fund, why don't you try this?
And remember that the tax, diesel/ petrol and insurance is normally a lot dearer on a 4x4
 
Yay, well done you jesstickle!

My first trailer was an old Rice £750 - heap of junk. Heavy, brakes didn't work, all fastenings knackered. Soon got fed up with it and got a loan to get brand new Ifor Williams (£2,800 at the time but about £3,000+ now I think).

First 4x4 was a J reg Isuzu Trooper at £3,500. Absolute diamond and never had a days trouble with it. But it just died on me one day.

Current 4x4 is an R reg Trooper, was £5,000 and has been an absolute money pit.

I just accept that loans and credit cards are an every day occurrence with a normal job and a horse and no rich daddypants to pay for everything.

Totally irresponsible of course but, hey, that's my life :D
