My mares hooves are cracking and crumbling from water absorption from the wet fields. I have bought a hoof supplement but that will take months to have an effect. I have also rationed the time she goes out but I cant ration it to much or she goes nuts! Is there anything I can put on her hooves to protect them and stop the feet drawing up as much water? I really dont know what to do! Thanks

My understanding is that hooves would normally crack because of other factors rather than wet ground. I.e poor hoof confirmation, nutritional imbalance, dry conditions.

Have you spoken to your farrier???

I would recommend writing to Keratex and ask they can advise you on a good regime with relevant products from their range. Wrote to them myself once and got a really comprehensive advice.

Our big hunter used to have terrible problems with crumbling feet when we got him. He now gets Blue Chip and has cornucrescine rubbed into his feet and his hooves are dramatically improved. However, Cornucrescine means they grow at a rate of knots!

My farrier has commented on how much better they are (he use to shoe him for previous owner).

my TB feet fall apart more in winter as he is stabled most of the time then. I spook to my first farrier who said that there was nothing wrong with my horses feet and that they all fell apart. I changed my farrier as i knew this was nonsense and he never did my horses feet any good as they do not grow and break but he used tocut them back.

my next farrier gave me a solution that seems to be doing the trick its some sort of binding solution that they used on dead people before they are buried i think to stop them rotting this therefore puts a protective layer across his feet which stops them breaking!

Im going on a bit sorry I will get the name and come back to you

Keratex hoof hardener all the way, this happened to my old horses feet at this time of year!

I followed the instructions as to how much to apply and they were brilliant.

Keratex hoof hardener regulates the moisture in the hoof so not too much gets in but the hooves can still breathe, it also strenghthens the existing horn.

Its brill stuff, costs about £18 a pot but lasts ages!!

As a priority I would ask your vet for advice.

Formulae feet is the most Hi-Tech additive available for horses hooves as it was developed by an international team of experts in the subject.

Farriers formula or formula for feet is great stuff - but first get your farrier up regulary and hoof oil every day.

You can get plastic boot things which can be used for turnout too I think?

Thank you for all the advice. My farrier came today. He said the wall is splitting which is why the holes are appearing at the base. He advised on pro vital and a supplement. Not sure what pro vital is though as I haven't used it before.
