Hooves - what can I put on the sole to stop/slow down "packing?"

Bailey has pretty good feet, but within the last few days I've noticed that despite having his feet picked every day out and some hoof stuff (effol moisturising gel stuff) dirt is really packing into his feet and it is soo difficult to get the stuff out. His hooves seem to be "giving" a bit at the bottom, cracking ever so slightly.

I'm worried because I think it is making a crack in his off hind worse; he had an abcess which burst through the coronet band and has now worked its way down the horn, and where it has been weaker, a small crack stemmed from the bottom of the abcess "hole" and it now seems to be "lifting."

Farrier was supposed to be out on Thursday, but due to a few circumstances has had to rearrange for next Wednesday, and I can't get anyone else out before then, they all seem to be busy.

Is there anything I can put on his soles which will make it more difficult for stuff to stay in there day to day - like a grease or something? Or should I keep him in until Wednesday when he can be done?

I am a worried mummy, please help

Try packing thickly with vaseline. This might stop things being so compact. To be honest it's a case for the farrier concerning the abcess etc, but vaseline may well help with all the compaction and it shouldnt soften the sole too much.
Good Luck, keep us informed
