Hopping and kicking

My 17 h id is having problems. When I start to school he is perfect in walk trot and canter. If I stop for about a min, something seizes and he can’t move forward with a hop and a kick. I just wondered whether any one had any ideas. He lives out and everything has been checked.

My first thought would be that he is tying up. I might test his muscle enzymes after a schooling session.

Get a video of him doing it emailed to your vet and take it from there.

A horse with a bone spavin can work sound but then seize up some when stopped.

You say everythign is checked, but obviously something was missed. I would agree with videoing and showing a vet then booking a performance type work up.

If he consistently does this then booking him in for a performance workup as part of which you ride him is the way to go. My vets offer this.

Getting it on video first to show your vet would be a good call.

Sticking stifle would be my first thought.

But obviously your vet will need to review him to see what's going on.

Locking patella? Is he young/ poorly muscled? In theory it would get better as he gets stronger.
