Hi Peeps!
I'd like to run something past you guys if I may.
I went to the yard early today to fetch my horse in and for various reasons decided to shampoo his lower legs. Upon having a good nosey round his legs and hooves, I noticed on his near side, on both his front and back hoof (outer wall), he has a horizontal crack about an inch and a half down from the coronet band and probably just under an inch in length.
I had a really good look at these as Id not noticed them before.. on his back leg (white hoof), there looked like he'd suffered some bruising as the immediate area was a pink colour. Front font is black so couldnt really tell much. Theres zero heat in either of these feet and the horse is 100% sound.
I had a good look under his feet and theres no sign of any trauma there at all.
Now, a few months ago (think it was october), my horse went down in the back of someone's lorry. The way he fell meant that his near side hooves went under this persons FULL partitions. He bashed his near hind leg up a bit, although thankfully all the cuts were superficial, but he did have both near legs tucked under this partition.
The vet checked him over and gave him the all clear, albeit he had some bruising on his back leg and a chunk missing from his hoof wall on the front leg which is now growing out nicely.
Do you think these cracks could be related to this and are now growing out? Im having the farrier look at him after the weekend although im thinking he probably cant do much with them. The hoof wall is still perfectly strong, as i said zero heat, no lameness but what looks like some localized bruising now round the crack.
Any thoughts would be much appreciated or if you have any suggestions as to whether i should be actively "doing" anything in regards to these (at least before the farrier takes a look). I was wondering if it was worth considering some turnout chaps that might cover the cracks and keep them away from the excessive puddles we have in the fields.. but then not sure that would actually be of any benefit!
