hormone inbalance: tumor on pituitary gland?

Does anyone has any experience of mares with hormal inbalances? I've just had teh vet out and he said it could be the clover, a tumor on her pituitary gland or a tumor on her ovary...only symptom is that she has swollen teats, very calm, friendly and motherly...he seems to think that even if it is a tumor, nothing should develop from it...
 
Your vet seems to be hedging his bets!
Pituitary tumours are, if memory serves, linked to metabolism and Cushings syndrome.
Tumour on the ovaries would just exaggerate part of her cycle, presumably.
And clover? No idea but my hamster likes eating clover flowers!
If your vet doesn't think it's a problem, then don't waste your life worrying...

not sure about horses..but humans with this condition usually have thyroid problems! Your vet sounds like he is taking a stab in the dark but if it is not going to affect her just see how she goes. They can remove bits of pituitary gland in people which cures it!
 
i think he may be thinking a prolactin imbalance. prolactin is a hormone that stimilates milk production - which is why maybe she has swollen teats. this hormone can also be stimulated by a tumour on the pituitary gland, which i think is quite common (well it is in women!!) - but don't quote me on it! I wouldn't worry too much! HTH!
 
Thanks all, when people start talking about 'tumors' one starts thinking on cancer and death and all horrible things like that and I love her dearly and would do anything for her. he said he would blood test and scan her ovaries but, as she is not in pain and, whatever he finds he can't do anything about, I have said no for the time being. i am looking at whether there are any supplements that might help regulate her hormones...any ideas?
 
There are loads of herbal remedies on the market, i know dodson and horrell do them for example and although they are behaviour related they do balance hormones, perhaps worth giving them a call as they are incredibly helpful.
