My mare is a proper mare in her stable, she pulls faces, kicks the walls and generally is a bit of a grumpy moo. She is generally a good girl to handle, although can have marey episodes where she will plant and refuse to move.

She has recently started to be quite backward in her ridden work, which really isn't her. She is having back/teeth/saddle checked in the next week or so, but bh I think a majority of it is "teenage" attitude and may be conected to her seasons, as she was horrid last week and came into season this week...

Has anyone tried mare supplements for this type of behaviour with any success?

I am afraid I am not a great mare expert as have only ever owned/ridden 2 (never again....sorry Kat ..only joking) I did dabble with the NAF suppliment Oestress with my Point to Point mare but I was not too convinced that it made much of a difference.

My personal advise is to do a trial period on Regumate (pref Porcine as much less expensive) This is guaranteed to control her cycles & then you can discover if this actually affects her behaviour. If it works well you could then try different cheap alternatives to see if they give the same effect.

I would do it this way round rather than months of different suppliments that maybe dont work &then discover that its just her 'teenage' phase & not hormonally related.

Thistle/Beauchamps had a mare on Regumate last season. PM her for her thoughts on the matter. SHe is quite thorough with her horses & will have fully investigated the matter (oh & she has fab Vets who I used to work for !!!!)

Thanks Joss,

Part of me does think it is her just being a teenager, but she is a bit marey anyway, so I just wonder

I've got my vet coming out in the next few weeks anyway to do jabs, so will see what he thinks too

Hopefully she will be back to usual Lucky as opposed to evil Lucky

What about that silver lining herbs company? I think they do a hormonal one?

I havent tried them, but have a call into them for something else.

Not much help with moody mares as my girl constantly radiates sunshine - she might not go, but she radiates sunshine!!!

Now teenagers yes I know a thing or two about them as the Buckeroo is going through the Lippizanner stage - launching up and through the air with no warning when excited and then his piaffe steps are incredible all the way home!!!

most mares are starting to cycle due to the weather etc. my is a bit of a madem when she is cycling i put her on feemark hormones and i know for a fact it works as i thought it wasn't worth the money and took her of it and she went back to her old marish ways so she is on it all the time now

Strongly recommend Global Herbs Frisky Mare plus. We had an awful mare in last winter who was very hard to handle - couldn't be led in on four legs, etc etc. Put her on this stuff and she became a lamb I wouldn't have thought such a change was possible.

I too have used Frisky Mare (global herbs) with success and like Tikino only found out that it worked once I had stopped and then re-put her on it. I stopped in November and have noticed her old ways creeping back in the last couple of weeks so will probably buy a tub again this weekend.

All the global herbs supplements that I have used have all done a fantastic job, so would definitely suggest buying a tub of 'frisky mare'.

Hope it works for you

Thanks guys.... all very helpful!

It looks like it is just teenageness

But will definitely keep it in mind for future possible bouts of "grumpy-mareness"

Regumate worked wel for F last year. she always seemed to be in pain when is season, would literally throw herself up the walls.

I am now considering getting her checked out this yesr (scanned?) and asking about a marble implant. last year her seasons started in march, this year it was early Jan.

If you're thinking it's hormonal, do a Regumate trial and then you'll know definitively. If you then decide to go with something herbal or similar you'll at least know what you're targeting and have a baseline for efficacy, as it seems the available "non veterinary" products have varying levels of success with different horses.

I used Regumate on one of my mares for this very reason and it definitely helped... So I knew it was hormonal.

I took her off it in October last year and so far have not needed it (although she has not come into season yet). I am hoping that we will not need it immediately as it was rather expensive, but we will have to see how things go. I would also consider the marble too longer term.

My mare does this evil face when adjusting rugs, when she's having an off day and can be a total madam when it suits her - must be a mare thing!
My vet commented many years ago that he thought she had a hormone imbalance due to how she is built - very chunky for her breed & with a stallion-esque neck (not fat, just solid), and also how dominant she is and having to be the boss over the other horses - she's 14hh!
I keep her on a Vitex tincture, which is the liquid form of the herb vitex agnus castus/chaste tree berries. This has helped her alot and the mood swings have really lessened.
You may find that her change in attitude towads work could be tied in with her seasons/cycle as her hormones could be skew-wiff atm, my mare can be funny with her girth and rug straps when she is in season too.
The vitex is affordable too

F has had a horrid season this time, yesterday she nearly removed my head and kicked the tackroom door as I was nearby, she wasn't kicking out at me, just generally kicking the wall and pressing her hips against it. Spoke to vets, we have a visit Thurs, hopefully will get a marble inserted then. Should be more cost effective than Regumate as she has started her seasons so early this year.
