Hormones - pls help.......

This is also in breeding but wondered if anyone here had encountered something similar......

The grey horse in my sig is 4 and we've been trying to back her for the last 10 weeks now. She seems to have a hormone overload of some sort - she's been into season a ridiculous number of times and always seems like she's about to come in - lots of tail swishing looks a bit uncomfy.

Now, her back etc has all been checked, saddle fits, teeth done so there are no other physical issues.

Vet came and gave her a hormone jab about 3 weeks ago now which in theory should have started her cycling normally. Also started her on NAF Oestress at the same time. However, neither seem to have worked.

Vet is now suggesting a scan to find out what's going on internally and then take it from there. What are our options? Regumate? Marble? Are either of them likely to work? is there anything else we could try?

Now, obviously, I want the mare to ride just now but in future I'd like to breed from her.

If she was your mare how would you be proceeding?

I am lucky as with my mare you would never know if she was in season but my friends mare (a tb) is the exact opposite - always seems to be in season and luuurves the boys - even having a foal and being 'old' at 24 hasn't changed her!! If she was mine I would talk to the vets about what investigations they can do - to me there would be no point in using Regumate at huge cost if her hormone levels etc are normal or if she doesn't need extra oestrogen but needs progesterone etc etc. Is this sort of investigation covered by your insurance?

I am talking from a human medicine standpoint - not sure what is available for neds but personally don't think trial and error is good enough with the costs involved. Hope you can find a solution which helps your girlie.

I have a friend who had the same problem when she got scanned they found one of her ovaryies was the size of a basket ball swift op to have it removed now she is fine!

Ooops please dont think I am saying that your mare has this....just might be a good idea to get a scan.....put your mind at rest!!!

I would also have all the checks done first. Regumate is expensive and if you down that route it's a nightmare!! You have to be careful when handling it, and it doesn't always work!!

I would definitely go for the scan, as my immediate thought was granulosa(sp!) tumour on ovary - the symptoms are as you would be describing my mare. She had the ovary removed and returned to her old self within weeks, she is also breeding sound with one ovary - prognosis is normally good.
I'm obviously not saying that is definitely what your mare has, but it's worth checking out.

Hi-ya, plenty to say on this subject!!

first of all, if you want to breed from your mare I think you should definately not go for the marbles - once they are in they are very difficult to get out!!

I had a lot of problems with my new mare last year as she did not stop her seasons even in deepest darkest winter. She ended up being extremely stuffy and uncomfortable being ridden. I had her scanned once and it turned out she had an infection in her uterus, she cleared it on her own with a season but the seasons kept on coming. So the vet recommended I put her on regumate and we haven't looked back. The stuffy behaviour has gone and she doesn't have the 'vacant' days she used to have when she was in season.

Before regumate we tried all the supplements - none of them with any effect.

Think how much you pay for oestress, the regumate only works out at about £1 a day so its not much more.

I would get her scanned to make sure there isn't anything major wrong on the inside and if there isn't you should consider giving regumate a go - you can get small bottles to try so you aren't forking out £100+ to start off with.
