Why are livery yards so bitchy?! I was talking to a good friend of mine (not on the same yard as me) about going out for hacks and she informed me shes not allowed to hack - not because her mum said no, her horse is lame, or any of that, but because of fear that she'll be reported to the bhs/rspca (again) by jealous stupid other liveries!!

she told me the last livery got bullied off the yard by the others, and now they've turned on her. Last year my friends pony was diagnosed with large tumors which were causing her problems. my friend paid for the operation and now pony is doing fine, at a healthy weight and in top condition for her age (shes an oldie!).

jealous people at her yard have reported her to the rspca/bhs for 'abuse' and when they came around to inspect said pony, they kept pointing out at 'how she used to be ribby' (BECAUSE OF THE TUMOURS which are now gone :) ). they then informed her (with no vets opinion) she shouldnt do any more than a trot. My friend informed them that her vet had said pony is fine for hacking/cantering even jumping every now and then (she is 21 this year). Anyway the BHS gave her a snotty response 'we'll take it up with your vet and get back to you' and oh guess what they never got back because they know they were in the wrong telling her that! ugh.

now my friend is scared to ride her horse as often as the vet informed as she doesn't want to be reported by liveries again.

it winds me up because she is such a lovely girl and would do ANYTHING for her horse! She is clearly well fed, rugged and healthy, and could want for nothing. She's said she'd move yards but when she moved last time it took months for her horse to settle and she doesn't want to upset her again by moving.

it just angers me that some people in the horse world can be so darn horrible as to make someones life so bad when clearly they do everything they can for their horse :( i dont even know what advice to offer her, but i know i'd hate to be in her situation so much

sorry rant over! :(

While I see your point about the bitchiness which is inexcusable, your friend is also an adult and should act like one. If she is unhappy at the livery yard she should move, if she can't move she should ignore the others and go about her business. Despite what she may think, the welfare of a horse has to be pretty dire before the RSPCA will do anything about it and although they may turn up and ask questions this doesn't mean they can take her horse away. She should explain the background and that the horse is under the vet's care and that should be that. Other than that she should just go out for hacks as normal.

A very worthwhile rant ;)

If this really is a problem, my advice (as a former Inspector) is this - asking her vet to write a report - may require a visit - that the horse is sound and fit to be used for.........

keep this report safe, and if necessary, copy it and laminate, and stick to the stable door or notice board. Then let them get on with it.

It is up to HER VET what that horse can do, and if she is in receipt of a current vet report, she has absolutely nothing to worry about.

Or move yards ? But that report will be there if it happens in future.

I'm sorry about the bitching, I know how bad it can get, I think many of us at livery yards have experienced the same thing. Horses bring out the very worst in some people.

I would say "here's the RSPCA/BHS number, please go ahead & ring them" then I'd hand them the phone number & carry on.
If the welfare people do come out just put them in touch with the vet.
By not riding she is giving in to the bullies, standing up to bullies is really hard but unless she does they will carry on.

^^^^This. fully agree. Fight fire with fire. The RSPCA and BHS dont always react to the most obvious neglect. Do as the vet says, and there will be no case to answer.

thankyou :) ive linked her to this thread so she can read your replies im sure she will appreciate the kind words and advice .. you are all so lovely!

I can't believe this sort of behaviour goes off on yards, so she's scared to hack out due to what other liveries will think or say (despite what reasons they are), it's disgraceful, what does the YO make of all this?

Go for your ride, let them talk and report her if they so wish, if your friend is not doing anything wrong and the pony has been seen by the vet and there is no welfare issue due to being ridden, then she's not got anything to worry or feel guilty about surely so ingnore them all.

Or move yards.

Hi everyone...thanks for your replies it means a lot (I am the said owner)!
If it wasn't for the "bad feeling" that I get when I walk on the yard... :/ I am quite happy where I am, good location good hacking, the other liveries are nice.
these are the type of horse people who "have been there, done it, were born on a horse and gave birth on a horse!"
it isn't financially possible to move yards and my horse would get too unsettled...:/
even when nothing's said. the atmosphere isn't nice. when they are nice, they are nice, but when they're not....
we really do like the yard, its small and private and you can escape from things -- MOST of the time! just wish they'd sort themselves out and we can all get along? isn't too much to ask...

it does really get to me though:/
thanks for postign this jess<3
will definitley be printing out something from the vet, I can tell you that now !! xxx

When I kepy my horse on a yard in North London I was frequently told by other liveries (they where quite serious) that I would kill my horse because I hacked him out too much. Said horse lived quite happily until aged 26 when he was put down as a result of a colic attack. I had horse from age 7 and was ridden until his last days. Sadly there are a lot of very nasty people out their that have nothing better to do that spurt out some serious venim. Your friend should keep on hacking as it is the best thing for her horse.

Ask to see their qualification certificates from when they graduated as equine vets. Then tell 'em to shove it when they can't produce one. How dare they scare and bully you into not wanting to enjoy your horse anymore.

I think I would have to move and give the mare a calmer for a while or something, why don't people keep their noses out, keep their hands off stuff that isn't their's, thats my rant about my saddle being pinched :-(
