Hi All, Here are a couple of pics of the patient. He is accepting all IV well and behaving altho a little stressed in the box.
Tonight he has had leeches put on him to try and get the blood circulated as the skin and muscle is dying fast. They are tiny tonight but will be huge fat buggers tomorrow hopefully, how clever?!
Hoping he comes home later this week but box rest for a very long time and I have no idea when a saddle can be put on his back for??

oh my word, that looks like it was really nasty. Fingers crossed for a speedy recovery, he is a gorgeous boy. Keep us updated x
 
Omg, glad he is on mend. I didnt read your original post I was to scared to read it but will go back and see what happened to you.

ooh am pleased to hear/see that there is no infection though and that the stitches are holding atm poor boy.

Its going to take a long time but I have seen before and after pics of comparable injuries that generally heal really well.
 
Glad to hear he seems to be recovering well. Thanks for posting the photos - have shown them to my daughter to explain why you have to be careful about gates, a fact I know too well having had a similar accident myself.
 
My god that was like you say horrific....but what a great job the vets have done...not too sure on their clipping style mind you LOL...

What a brave boy he is and he looks just adorable.

I was out riding a while ago with a friend her stirrup got caught on one of those gates that the farmer had left his padlock jammed in a funny position horse shot through the gate ripped the girth off and saddle (new dressage one) ruined and rider hit the floor. She said she was claiming for a new saddle from the council for letting this go on as a few riders had had problems so yes report it and if I was your friend I would try for vet bills.

I hope your friends horse comes through this ok
 
Poor boy, that looks so sore!! The only comparable injury I have seen was a mare that ripped her chest open on barbed wire. Took several months to heal, but it did and very successfully, just a tiny scar left as evidence. Fingers crossed for a similarly successful recovery for him. On a separate note, I have been trying to explain the risks involved in bad bridleway gates to my local council officer responsible, we have several badly hung gates with difficult handles and catches (some the same as your photo) and gates on self closing springs that shut up on you too quickly. If you don't mind I will forward those pictures to him to try and illustrate my point, I don't think he understands how dangerous they can be, thinks Im making a huge fuss over nothing, hopefully those pictures will help to make it clear to him, how easily these things can happen.
 
myboyche - i am sure my friend would be happy to let these pics help prevent another accident, i must press her to start making some headway but only when her head is ready to think about it. i of course will also do my best. he is such a lovely lovely pony of the most sunny disposition and we cant wait to have him home. my boy went up to his stable and looked over the door last night hoping to find him

he looks happy though and is gorgeous. I do hope he heals quickly and well.
We had an issue with gates and their latches on a bridlepath near me, a friend and her horse were injured and saddle torn apart. Not only have the latches been dealt with, but the council removed the gates completely. Good luck.

Many years ago my rather spooky mare ran into a branch which the council had trimmed, and did something very similar to this. HUGE flap of skin hanging loose. Miles from anywhere and in the days before mobile phones were standard accessories. I shall never forget standing for hours supporting a doped horse on my shoulder while the vets put in dozens of stitches. I can't remember how long she was on box rest, but it might have been a week or so, and then was led out in hand for weeks so she didn't hare around the field and undo anything. She healed with only the tiniest scar visible. The main thing is to keep infection out if at all possible.

What a stunning boy. Those stitches look very neat, amazing when you consider how bad the wound was beforehand. Here's to a straightforward and full recovery for him.
 
QR - only just caught up with your previous post. Thank goodness the poor horse is making such a good recovery. May I also ask to use the pics to try and get some tricky gates on our local bridlepath replaced?
