Horrific day on Saturday

My friend and I took our young TBs to the beach on Saturday. Her mare, Kush, had been out there a lot but Fready (who I bought in late December but who moved to the South Island on the 12th of January) had never seen the sea. They both behaved exceptionally well but her mare took a wrong step in gallop and shattered a front leg. Thankfully, an incredibly kind husband and wife stopped to help. I held the mare while the wife held Fready (who was amazing the entire time) and the husband took my friend to try to get help. Unfortunately, the vet couldn't be there quickly but the husband had access to a gun. They also offered to have her buried at their property that was just up the road. Another car also stopped and helped to move her above the high tide line. The entire fire department then arrived on Sunday morning to move her.

Complete shocker of a day made worse by Tally deciding to choke on his feed in the freezing rain on Sunday evening. He managed to resolve it himself (while I was frantically calling the vet for the second time in two days).

Just a horrible day.

Oh, that's so tragic! I'm sorry - what a shock. Thank goodness for the kindness of strangers - it had to make an awful situation a little more bearable.

Best thoughts for you and your friend.

So very sad for you but at least you were able to do right by her. Hope things settle down and no more vet calls.

LL I am sure it was just a freak accident that could happen anywhere. Mind you in this country I do not think a passer by could have helped so promptly.

RIP Kush.

The people who stopped to help were just incredible. Not only did they help in totally dire circumstances but they also buried Kush with dignity. They took my friend out to where she was buried and explained how she was lying. They've fenced her off from their stock and my friend is welcome there whenever she wants and can plant a tree if she wants to. They were complete strangers when they stopped to help, we didn't even get their names until later than evening.

There are some lovely people around. Thank goodness they were there.

I'm so sorry. I hope the kindness of of the people who helped you goes a small way to alleviating the horribleness of your weekend. Poor mare and poor friend.

To make matters worse (!), she wrote off her ute on Tuesday in a nasty crash where a tyre blew and it flipped. Thankfully, she's okay but her saddles were both in the car and Kush's saddle looks pretty busted. I took her out to visit Blaze on Tuesday afternoon which I hope helped.

I did get back on Tally yesterday evening and I am very surprised at how much it's affected my confidence even though I logically know it was just a freak accident. He seems to have recovered fine from his choke on Sunday and has gone back to his favourite hobby of herding the sheep.
