That is so sad. There have been so many deaths in the past few months due to speeding motorist in the New Forest, its been reported loads of times, from the pony that had to be put down and whose mate lay down beside it in the road after it had died to the pony that was decapitated due to being hit by a speeding car. When will people learn???

What cruel and callous bastards! That picture and story has just brought tears to my eyes. That poor mare must have truly suffered at the hands of some driver with no conscience at all.
Makes me want to drive over their back and leave them on an isolated road to suffer!

Thats picture is so so heart breaking and lets hope it does they job. Ppl need to remember the forest and the animlas were there before the cars and the road !

Never a truer word! But sadly there are those with vehicles who think they have a god given right to be on those roads and to mow down animals as they please

Its so so wrong. We had to stop this morning and drive around this pigeon that was just wondering around the road lol I couldnt just do that! some ppl make you so god damn angry!

I can't understand why anyone would drive fast if there is a risk of wild Ponies on the road. Even people who don't care about the Ponies surely care about the large dent hitting one would cause. The picture is so sad :-(

Sadly i agree with you...these ponies have right of way, annoys the crap out of me that people that live local are probably in such a rush that a pony on the roadside is a nuisance and they dont give a rats tash how many they hit and injure as long as they get from a-b in time
mad.gif
(sadly drivers of today, local or not are in too much of a rush to get to were they are going and dont give a shite about anything else
frown.gif
,sickens me because i doubt they would have any more concscience if it was a child they hit

I can't actually look at the photo or the report, but drive through that road twice a week and saw the signs saying there had been another animal casualty. I am constantly annoyed at people who go much faster than the 40 mile an hour speed restriction, not least when they do so past the babies on the verge.

Very often there will be a baby on one side of the road and mum grazing on the other, people just don't seem to take account of the fact that they will run to mum if scared by something. I think there need to be much harsher penalties for anyone caught speeding there and certainly for anyone who injures or kills an animal. Watching the horses of the New Forest is a constant joy to me and thousands of others, it should not be allowed to be ruined by a few morons who can't be bothered to think about another living being.

It's an unfortunately common occurence in the forest - not only ponies but cattle. And it is often the locals that drive way too fast. Even the current speed of 40mph (except in villages in the Hampshire side of the forest which have now been reduced to 30mph) is too fast for many of the roads where animals are often grazing in the hedgerows just round a corner. Signs were put up on high risk roads a few years ago totalling how many animals have been killed so far that year, but they lose impact with people who drive past them regularly (assuming they are people who care in the first place!) Although people driving too fast are the main problem, unfortunately tourists think it is cute to feed the ponies from their cars (despite all the signs advising them not to) so the foals lose any fear of vehicles from a young age, which obviously does not help.
