My horse is 18 years old, fit (competes prelim/novice dressage) and is very well in himself. He is a head shaker which is controlled with a nose net and ear bonnet. Still gives an occasional toss of the head if bothered by flies, pollen, wind etc but nothing too violent. He does have a sensitive nose though and will rub, blow it more than the average horse and you can get a flehmen response playing with his nose or giving him a massage.

In the summer probably round about June time I noticed some blood in one nostril when I bought him in from the field. Lots of pollen flies etc around so just put it down to him rubbing his nose too hard. However the problem is still there. Never much blood occasionally a tiny drip in front of the stable door or a smear on his white front leg. Sometimes after riding especially if he has been snorting/blowing his nose there is a bit of blood in his nose and on the nose net. Sometimes I can see a little blood in his nostril when he comes in from the field. The amount of blood doesn’t seem to have increased but the frequency of seeing it has increased to most days now. It always seems to be from the same nostril.

Took him into the vets this morning, camera up the nose, head X-ray and all looks fine. A big sigh of relief that nothing nasty has been found but sort of back to square one. My gut feeling was always that he was overblowing his nose as such which was causing the bleed. The vet is tending to agree with me and I have been sent home with an aerohippus (equine inhaler) to see if that helps.

He had a 6 month flu jab whilst at the vets so I am going to start with the inhaler on Monday. Would be really interested to hear if anyone has had a similar experience ?
