About 6 months ago i was lucky enough to be able to set up my own little yard!
To keep my 19 year old gelding company i bought a little section a mare, he's always been with mares without an issue.
He still a gentleman, happy to deal with them both in the field, still easy to groom, tie up etc if he can see her!
However seperating them to ride is becoming a real problem, dangerous at times!
Calling and rushing, even cantering on roads to get back to her!
He has been schooled and kept elsewhere the last 2 weeks and the mare has been with a friend and her ponies and they have both been fine! His behaviour has been great!
Put them back together yesterday and he's already stressing when i brought him into his stable this morning and she refused to be caught! Had to turn him back out before he jumped out!!!
I have 2 small paddocks next to each other, so they could be seperated but still see each other, would that help maybe??

Any advice would be much appreciated!!

Thank you :)

Hiya
I would suggest separating them in the two paddocks and see what they do(watch them for a while)it's usually the mare that doesn't care as much but I would try that and they may get better over time. It is quite common but will take time to sort its self out. As it is quite common, other people may have other suggestions.

Thank you for the reply!
I'm definitely going to try that and hope for the best!
The mare doesnt care at all, it's the gelding that loses his mind!!

yeah they are all like that!
I think that time is definitely an important factor. They just have to get used to being gradually separated.
If you tried taking Him away from Her for short little periods of time, like walking Him around a local hacking route, it might help as well. It will get Him used to being taken away from Her and then He might be more relaxed when She goes out.
