apologies if this is a daft question. In terms of Dogs age to human they say 7:1 so what is the equivalent with horses. And why do most ponies age better than horses??

Appreciate it must depend on breed & how much work the horse / pony has done but I know many ponies still competing in their 20's plus and yet most horses value seem to reduce after 12 years

Goes off to ponder..............................................

Oh well that makes my yearling 2.2 yrs in human yrs.Sure read in magazine that 2 x human years then increases to 3x human years after certain age. Can't remember which mag will have to find it and check

Ponies live longer because they are closer to the size that nature intended horses to be. They were big dog size until man bred them bigger to make them more useful, and in the process also made them more fragile.

I've warned my husband that we need to allow for our Shetland three year old in our wills!

I would put a three year old at 16-18 in man years, a four year old at 20-ish, six year old 25, 8 year old about 30, ten year old 40, twelve 45, fourteen 50, sixteen 55 etc.
