I have a horse on DIY livery and work full-time, quite long hours.

I am expecting my first baby in November and wondered how others coped in this situation? I will be on maternity leave for six months but then going back to work four days per week - I would be really interested to hear how others have managed it?

i have seven on diy and three children, last winter was not good because it was so cold, the winter before was ok and my little one was fine to sit in the scarey buggy. It is hard but it can be done. Oh make sure you get a three wheeler so you can push it through anything. I was also working full time. Good luck

I done it ok and parked my car right outside my stable so he stayed in the car while I mucked out etc and made sure the heating in the car was nice and hot by the time I got to the yard.
Also keep that anti batitial hand stuff in the car so if he cried etc I just put that on my hands than handled him. As soon as he could stand he was mucking out

Snap! :D

Sorry can't give you any advice but am obviously very interested in this post!

Are you still riding? How are you finding it? Do you still fit in your clothes? I'm having to wear leggings to ride in at the mo! They're thinner too so have been a godsend in this weather. Some of my jods fit but they're not as comfy as the leggings...

Oh, you probably already know but H & M do a fantastic range of maternity clothes at very reasonable prices! Sorry that was off topic!!!!!!!

Hi all, thanks for responding, I feel much more positive about it now I know others have coped. I really don't want to have to get rid of the horse but at the same time I know I have to be practical about it. I think how last winter was worries me most as it was so horrendous and trying to look after a newborn baby as well would just be a nightmare!

Sarah1, yes I am still riding and finding it fine! I am only schooling and hacking - are you still riding and finding it ok? As of last weekend have had to start wearing leggings as I cannot even do the zip up on my jodhpurs!

Ohh, hadn't heard about H&M, will definately go and have a browse!

When are you due? Are you still doing the horse yourself - what are your plans?

I just had my second baby in December and got my second horse the end of november. I found it a huge difference having my horrses living out. You can get footmuf for on car seats. You just have to be more organised like if yu are bottle feeding take bottles with you in the car etc. It is very do-able.
I was in peacocks the other day and they have a maternity range now. H&Ms baby clothes are really nice and quite different too.

Yeah still riding - finding I'm a bit more tired than I usually am so if I don't feel like it I don't ride but then I do feel guilty!!!!!!! Same as you, hacking & schooling tho have promised hubby I won't ride alone!
I didn't know about H&M until Saturday either when I ventured in on the off chance! I got 2 pairs of cut off casual trousers and a few vests for £40 which I thought was a bargain! They fit lovely too!
I'm due on the 5th, when are you due? Are you going to find out what you're having?
I'm working right up to (well couple of weeks before & also taking a weeks holiday if my replacement is getting on ok) then having 6 month soff before returning full time. I'm an Accountant for a small business so I need to be here full time if I want to stay in this job however I may have to speak to boss about altering hours slightly in the winter months!
Keeping the horse, no ifs ands or buts, tho my eldest niece is home from Uni so will be taking over the lions share of the riding from now on I think & I'll go for a leisurely hack at weekends!
Have you been ok or been poorly? I keep being told how lucky I am that I've not been sick!!!!!!!!!!
Good luck with everything, hope all goes well & do keep me posted!

My 1st child is just 9mths, I have 3 horses. He has really fitted into my routine, we walk to the yard most mornings and he loves watching me do the horses (one of them is his sec a), he's very fond of her and gets very excited when i get her out in the morning), when he was smaller and still breastfeeding i used to feed him just before i left and he's sleep whilst doing them then he'd be ready for next feed by the time we got home.
In the freezing/snowy conditions we went in the car and i left him in the car with it running.
Liek the others have said its very do able just be organised and try and get some form of routine and they soon get used to it :) good luck :)

Thanks all, your posts have made me feel much better about it all. So really as long as I am organised then it should be fine - at least I will be on maternity with the baby over the winter and back to work in the summer months which should make life a little easier! Will keep you posted with how it goes - and no doubt more advice at the time!

CPW, have you noticed a change in your horses behaviour towards you?

As daft as it probably sounds my boy has been so well behaved, even more so than usual & has remained calm with me on board even when there are things that usual get him a bit giddy!!!!!

Also he seems to like cuddling me with his nose on my tummy?! It's strange cos he's never really done that before - he is affectionate but he's being soppier than usual!

He's also taken to following me round his field when I'm in there doing jobs - but if I take the dog with me he'll graze happily as I already have protection in the form of the little bouncy chocolate thing!!!!!!

When I was pregnant with my first I had these huge feeling of guilt that I wouldn't be able to give enough attention to my baby if I had a horse and that it wouldn't be fair on my new baby. I sold my horse when I was about 7 months pregnant, which is a decision I regret to this day. I obviously had alot of hormones and wasn't thinking rationally.
I now have a second baby (well she is one) and a horse on full grass livery, I work full time, as does my husband so the full grass livery is a perfect choice for me.
It does help if you have people you can call on to babysit in times of need and if you have a good setup at your yard like monsters, being able to park the car right outside the stable.
The main thing is to enjoy yoyr pregnancy and don't worry or fret too much!
Good luck
