I am a happy hacker mainly, I am happy to pop a few jumps,go hunting etc.... just bumble along in the countryside minding my own business.

But since being on here I think its making me jumpy!! I have had a near miss with a forage harvester nearly squashing me and 5 yr old, but saying that now I hear a car flying along the lane and think what if! etc etc... am sure reading all the horror stories on here isn't good for you!
 
Not so much jumpy, but I do need to slap myself sometimes.
If I spend too much time on here, reading all the posts, I tend to go into overdrive.
When a youngster so much as farts or squeals out of line, instead of giving it a tap and riding it forwards, I feel sudden urge to have a full lameness work up, physio, saddler, dentist and a scope for ulcers :D

HAHA I actually deleted the 2nd part of my thread thinking it would be too inflammatory!! Went something along the lines of and why can't horses just buck because they are being naughty, or go lame because they have trodden on a stone and bruised their sole, why does it have to be vets immediately, paniccccccccc or teeth.... oooorrr back probs makes you neurotic, there are lots of healthy horses out there that rarely get anything wrong.

I am a veterinary nurse and of course I rarely see healthy animals,unless for boosters... so my dogs only have to get a snotty nose and I am convinced they have a tumour up their nose lol xx

It's not made me nervous as such, but it has made me think and wise up a bit!

Before I came on here I would NEVER wear any hi viz for fear of looking silly :embarrassed: but I'd look sillier if I was smeared out across the road.

Looking at various posters pictures/videos and reading a variety of advice has helped my confidence no end though, and has jogged my memory of what to do if things go wrong! It's not all bad :)
 
You have to remember that whilst people love coming on forums and reading and contributing to threads - starting a new thread is another matter and ususally people do that because they have a problem/something has gone wrong/ need advice.

I would take the forum rather like the news in some ways - you get the odd heart warming story, but the majority is of unrest and violence and spending cuts - all doom and gloom and negativity! Which is why it is nice when OPs feedback positive news/results :D

Oh I am not knocking the place, don't get me wrong, and have often asked advice and taken on board the replies, have met two lovely people on here who have told me items.... and giggled at some funny posts.

It was a follow on from the lady who said her daughter is frightened after witnessing an horrific accident, was just saying I think this place makes me a little neurotic!

I have a friend who is a really really nervous rider to the point she probably won't get on again, she has a fear of being dragged by her foot in the stirrup and being kicked to bits, in reality how often do we fall off and not get caught up! xx
 
It's funny really cos I feel that reading the forum has had the opposite affect for me in that so many people seem to have problem horses that either nap , buck , wont load , go loopy at shows or traffic that to be honest I look at paddy and take a sigh of relief that he's so well behaved and level headed and easy to do , this doesnt mean though that i don't find it enlightening as some advice and tips are really good - it challenges the way that i think about things.
 
Made me think that I am a fat lazy slobber of a horse owner.

However it hasnt convinced me to do 4.30am starts as yet.

I do watch my horses weight more now though.


Wont even talk about my views on dog ownership now. I recently went into over drive, had to slap my self and stop having too many hangups lol
 
I actually dislike H&H forum very much! Why, you may ask am I on here? Well I am being driven to it from insane boredom at my job! I used to be ADDICTED, and i'm talking about proper almost needed therapy addicted. But I started feeling so negative every time I came away from the forum that I stopped. It seems to me that the majority of posts are having a dig, finding fault and really an excuse for an arguement. There are of course some informative and heart warming posts but they are few and far between, and even if something starts as positive, someone normally twists things and it becomes a very negative thread. Perhaps it's because i'm not 'mainstream'. But yes, H&H doesn't make me nervous but it makes me feel miserable! Now then...back to being miserable and reading other threads :D x

I have read the horror stories on here but to be honest i get up the next morning and get on with it.
Does sometimes make me think i must be the worst owner in the word, horse was hopping lame the other day, did i call the vet did i hell, noticed a scratch on her shoulder and figured the foal had given his mum a beating and left her to get on with it (along with a sachet of bute) she is fine now btw.
And no i dont get to the yard until 10am at weekends and 9ish during the week, and you know what they all cope till then and so do all the other horses that i get asked to look after, i am a no fuss, just get on with it old school type, that if i fall off today dont mean i am gonna do it again tomorrow (well i will try my blasted hardest no too as i dont bounce any more)
 
I'm going to buck the trend I'm afraid. I haven't changed a damned thing since I've been hanging out here. I still don't have a nervous bone in my body (which makes me very lucky rather than gifted) and I still assume my horses are ok unless they're actively lame. If they're lame I call the vet!

I do ask for advice but I usually already know what I think and go with that and am really only after confirmation.

I'm probably a bad person or something for not being convinced that my horses are both dying

I bet the majority of horsey ppl in the world don't call a vet unless its a last resort... you soon get fed up with calling them and paying bills, when basic husbandry usually sorts it!

Our 5 yr old pawed at an iron gate whilst we were trying to open it and got his whole foot stuck, panicked, pulled back and finally freed himself,he stood there on 3 legs waving it around, really thought he needed a bullet! walked him back across the field on foot and he gradually walked out the pain, didn't call a vet, next day he wasn't lame! I am also not a panicker :-) xx

lol yep hubby threatened to shake me the other night when i said i wondered if i needed to get the back person out for big girl because she misbehaved for the farrier:o:rolleyes: she was just being a hormonal moose really:D

Was having a pity party but a visit to my girl soon cheered me up :) and seeing the progress that I'm making with her stable and general ground manners (ridden she's a star) makes me stick 2 fingers up at those who have a downer on new owners ;)
 
The trouble with advice over the internet though is that people don't know the op or the horse, so while there are horses that misbehave and buck etc. without any pain issues it would be irresponsible to just say ride it forwards more strongly if the horse has problem with teeth, back, tack etc.

If someone came to me with a 'problem' horse it would be the first thing I'd check before sorting out; rather that than an in pain horse being given a thrashing:confused:

You are bound to get all the worst case scenarios on here too, and sometimes I think it can get a bit depressing, especially when there seem to be a lot of people having to pts or rehome their horses and the highlighting of cruelty cases. On the plus side there are some hilarious stories, and it's good to hear of others struggling with the same things even if it's just the weather! :D

Agreed with above -It is much easier to gauge with the horse in front of you but when it is written description of issues, you have to run through a whole gammit of possible causes, because just going off something someone has written can just be reponding to what they believe the issue to be.

Hope that makes sense.

Our kids ponies are can be naughty. Most the time it is high spirits and not enough exercise. Sometimes it is something the rider is doing or not doing. Sometimes it is because the pony really would rather be doing something else. Very rarely has it been a physical issue.

But when we bought a new pony he came with some issues that were pain related, and I was fortunate enough to have someone who was able to id this and provide a solution. (Not the vet, they missed the issue). Given that he had a pre purchase and a post purchase vetting I could have assumed that the issue was not physical, but it was. So it is still worth asking the question if there does seem no reason for behaviour changes.

Good girl! XX Some of the old timers are set in hidiously old fashioned ways that are just not right, so who says they know more than you! I say pick out the good advice from the old and young and make up your own mind :-) XX
 
There are tonnes of happy posts on here they just don't get noticed because the only posts that get replies are controversial ones. :p

As someone else has said it seems like a morbid place because people need advice when they have a problem. If everyone posted about what's going on normally it would be a very boring place. For example:

Rode Andy on a hack he was really good no spooking or being an idiot so I turned him out in the field where he wandered off and started eating. The next day I had a lesson he went well, not brilliant but not awful I then thought about tack cleaning but in the end I decided not to because I planned to ride the next day and it was going to rain. Blah, blah, blah...

It's much more interesting to hear about Andy when he's decided that the leaf was going to eat him, deposits me on the ground and gallops back to his stable where he's stood eating his hay. :p
