I have just been told of another horse attack in the Titchfield area in Hampshire which occurred last night. That makes 5 in the area, 4 in Titchfield and 1 nearby. As my horses are in that area obviously I am extremely worried. I have moved my horses closer to the house and asked my landlord and neighbour to make regular checks. My landlord has a shotgun (fully licensed) and is going to be seen carrying it!

Here is the Hampshire Horsewatch Police notification and then an Update regarding the first 4 horses. I only know about the horse from last night as my neighbour is friend's with a local policewoman.

"Horse Attack" is an emotive subject and fortunately such incidents are rare. When such reports are made they are treated seriously with a view to eliminate that there was a crime or substantiate the fact and deal appropriately.

Dear Member,

The purpose of this e mail is to inform horse owners of a set of incidents in the Fareham area and allow them to take any precautionary measures they feel necessary.

All investigations are entered into in order to detect and apprehend offenders as well as reducing the fear of crime.

Police are investigating the attack on three horses in the Fareham area. The incidents have been on consecutive nights with the last one being last night. (6th August 2012)

Crime reference is 44120304429

The horses have received veterinary attention and the attending vet confirms that the wound to each horse was deliberate and not of an accidental nature.

In each case the horse belongs to the same owner.

The reason for the attacks is unclear but at this time it appears the horses are being subject to injury perhaps as a way to get at the owner. This may be speculative but it is the basis for understanding why these incidents have occurred.

At this time I am not aware of any other incidents in the Fareham area or beyond.

Should anyone discover their horse has received an unexplained injury which cannot be easily discounted they should inform the police (dial 101). Also seek veterinary advice and attention for the wound. This will enable an independent assessment to take place. Any injury must be photographed.

As with all incidents prevention measures and the ability to deter crime should be entered into.

With regards the three horses that have been attacked are there any Hampshire Horsewatch members in the Fareham area or perhaps beyond who are willing to provide a high profile patrol of the area where the horses are kept. This would be a night time commitment. It is appreciated that this is a lot to ask. If anyone can assist will they please contact Victoria Hibberd on 07917 752493. Actual location can be disclosed by Victoria.

Any offers to assist should be undertaken in consultation with the police and Victoria.

It is appreciated at this late hour that there will be no offers but tomorrow or other nights there may be opportunity to help.

Thanks in anticipation.

Regards - David

Dear Member

This is to update you on the situation as described in the e mail I circulated the two nights ago. (this is copied below)

There have been no further incidents reported in the Fareham area.

Having spoken to Vicky Hibberd, the owner of the horses in Fareham, I am aware that some individuals did contact her and offered assistance. This is encouraging, knowing that the equine community will support one another.

However there has been a reported incident where a horse in Hambledon, near Waterlooville has received an injury to its left rump area. This occurred between 0830 and 1140 on Thursday 9th August 2012. The injury required veterinary attention. This matter is now subject to a police investigation. Crime reference 44120309587 refers. Until to the contrary is proved this incident is being treated as a criminal act.

As stated below an attack on a horse is a very rare occurrence and to have 4 reported incidents within four days must raise concern.

It is difficult to protect your horse when you can't be with it. Alone it is vulnerable.

You must use your own judgement to put in place any security measures you think are appropriate. Find out who your local Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) officers are. Phone Hampshire Constabulary on 101 and ask or visit www.hampshire.police.uk. Alternatively if the police station near you is open to the public go in and ask the Station Enquiry Officer. Talk to the SNT about security and any concerns you have. Discuss with them security, crime prevention measures that you may wish to undertake. Before undertaking any night time activity you are strongly advised to talk over your intentions with the police…………..once again you are encouraged to talk to your Safer Neighbourhood officers.

Please report anything you may feel is suspicious. This could range from vehicles seen in your area which are not known, individuals who are as far as you are concerned strangers to your locality, to finding an instrument lying on the ground (perhaps in close proximity to where horses are kept).

To contact the police dial 101

If you have any information which may assist the current investigations please call Hampshire Constabulary on 101 The current investigations are referenced as follows

RMS 44120304429
RMS 44120309587
RMS 44120306728

You may also call Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111 anonymously if you have information which may assist this or any other investigation.

Please forward to others who you feel may make use of this information.

At this time this information is only circulated to members within Region 2 of Hampshire Horsewatch which takes in Fareham and Hambledon.

I am blown away by this...they let him out on bail straight away, he lives local to the yard where he allegedly carried out the attacks...
Why isn't it taken more seriously?
