Sorry if this sounds disjointed but I am totally in shock. Found out 14yo 17hh horse this morning with a huge penetrating wound.

He looked miserable and was not with the others, thought he was hot (it was 7am but quite humid). Didnt come over when I spoke to the others so went to take a look. His bug rug drenched in blood on side, no damage to rug which was still done uper perfectly. Took rug off and nearly keeled over, horrific wound in a deep v shape, through skin and muscle to his ribs. Breathing very poor so prob in shock. Took to vets as it was quicker to get him seen, sewn as best they could and now just got home. I'm now getting decidedly shaky as realisation hits. Nothing found in the field, companion fine but a bit weirdly dopey. Vet believes too strange t be self inflicated and have just heard that a horse has been killed nearby.

Wil sleep with the horses tonight (plus gun and dog!!) but frantically worried as Police not exactly interested and RSPCA just about as good as......

Anyone know anything going on locally in East Kent?

I don't know if you are on facebook but there have been several incidences on EastKent horsewatch page of attacks on horses. There was the pony stabbed in Dartford,followed by a hammer attack in Herne Bay and then acid thrown in the face of a pony near Canterbury which later died. I sincerely hope this is not another attack. I hope your horse is okay and will recover.What a horrific injury however it happened. It's high time these attacks/suspected attacks were publicised properly. I'm a horse owner myself in East Kent not that far from Canterbury and these are very worrying.

I don't blame you for wanting to stay with them and keep a watchful eye open, keep yourself safe too though.

I hope you find whatever sick person did this, it is disgusting that the police and RSPCA don't want to know. It is the police force's job to look in to crimes and this is a very serious crime, far more important than many gripes they have to deal with, maybe you should phone them again.
 
Spike123, Thank you for your kind words of support. Sadly the only other options for this injury seem to be aborigine spear thrust from t'other side of the world or alien intervention. We may be lucky and keep our dear old boy but I fear that there are people out there of unsound mind. Regarding publicity. I told the police that I didnt want names and location in the press, paranoia is setting in and we feel that we want to hide and protect our horses. Our yard is very quiet and private, not obvious to passers by and neighbours are horrified. One has offered to walk the boundaries with 2 trained security dobermans, poor man nearly cried when he saw the horse.... These people are creeps and I think our only defence is to ger after them.
 
That is just awful. Every horse owner's nightmare! Good that you can sleep with the horses, but can they be brought in on nights when you can't do this? Ours are out 24/7 but I would bring them in if I even heard of an attack nearby. It sickens and terrifies me. I do hope your boy recovers. Horses are so friendly and trusting. I wish he's just pummelled the basta*ds. :mad:
 
Truly, truly awful - so sorry for your poor boy and hope and pray he makes a full recovery both mentally and physically. This is just so dreadful, I'm apalled the police and RSPCA aren't getting more involved.
 
i dont understand whats happening this way! So sorry about your poor boy, hope he makes a good recovery.
I do wonder whether this is all starting with the kids being on school holidays??
Will be going and checking our guys first thing and giving them all a big kiss.

He is being a very good patient and much brighter this morning, eating well judging by the number of time he had to be skipped out over night!

Hardest thing has been making a cotton rug to cover the wound - my spare bed is bereft on one white duvet cover....

I am dismayed that the Police just gave me a number and said that somebody would call me in 24 hrs, RSPCA did not commit to any date, time etc. Hopefully EK Horsewatch can warn people to be vigilant.

I know that I bang on about it but people still seem to think that if their horses are out they only need to check them once a day and sometimes that is a cursory over the gate look. Please keep a close eye on your animals and if you cant check them get someone else to do it and do it properly. We were lucky and the injury was relatively recent which made the vet's job easier and a better prognosis for the horse.

Thank you to all well wishers - Porky is very happy to have so many friends.
 
I am pleased he is feeling a little brighter this morning, and eating well is always a good sign.

You are very resourceful making a rug for him out of a bed sheet, clever idea.

I hope he continues feeling better and the Police/RSPCA get back to you soon.

I don't know which area you are but have a look at this and see if there are any near you, sorry to hear about this, it was my friends horse that was the reason the database was set up. I hop he recovers well xx

There wasnt actually an acid attack on a horse in canterbury......its my friends mare that actually had colic and died shortly after surgery ! also the one that was killed in herne bay with a hammer was a dispute between travellers
 
So glad to hear your horse is a bit brighter this morning. It doesn't bear thinking about what someone may be doing in that area. Hope he continues to improve and you're feeling a bit better yourself.

Re the above, none of these are linked, no acid was thrown at a pony, I understand the 'hammer attack' was in fact a falling out between travellers which sadly resulted in a mare dying. There is no 'nutter' doing the rounds. The rumour mill is going somewhat out of control at the mo and it needs to stop or the real incidents will be misunderstood. The incidents have not been publicised as they have very much been blown out of proportion.

That is absolutely awful for you all .It must have been your worst nightmare.I'm in Kent to,but quite a way off in Maidstone.I did hear of an incident from a friend when we were out hacking on sunday.It's awful to think that the sick person who is perpetrating these dreadful atrocities is still at large.We all need to be vigilant as the attacks seem to be far ranging.
