Horse beaten by children

In the Daily Mail horse had to be put down after allegedly being beaten with a metal pole by a gang of kids.
You cannot comprehend the mind set of people can you

I know this yard and it is not easy to get to if you don't have motorised transport. it isn't exactly isolated, by properties are quite far apart. I'm wondering if the eyewitnesses were in fact members of the same gang who didn't want to get involved because I can't believe no-one would have tried to stop it or call for help if they saw something like that going on. All very odd really.
