I took Mick down to see a fairly new pony at the yard yesterday. They greeted each other over the fence, and mick started playing with him - But as usual in his overly playful way he tried to take a bite at the other pony! Both the horses but esp Mick were pulling their top lips over their teeth (upwards) displaying their top front teeth. Does anyone know why? Is this a playful behaviour? Neither horse had their ears back or looked agressive.
 
ours do it if they get stuff on their lips like horse hair, slobber etc. they must taste a bit funny i guess. did they have fly spray on???
 
Sounds like its the flehmen-traps scents in the nose so they can smell them better, you see stallions do it a lot when mares are around

Oh very interesting. Neither had fly rep or any other artificially appied scents. Maybe because the horse is new and also recently gelded?
