My friend and I are having our horses freezemarked next week, having decided to have them done on the saddle patch has anyone got any advice on how long it will be roughly before we can ride again? My horse is a fit 17.2 warmblood in work 6 days a weeks so don't want him to have too much time off. Is it ok to lunge after a couple of days or so?

I believe that the only reason they're off work at all is because the saddle might rub so I'm sure that if you lunge without anything on the saddle area you'd be fine after perhaps a day or two just to let any soreness go down. If you look on their websites it tells you how long although it does depend on the horse - my foal was done about 6 months ago and the last bit of scab came off yesterday!!!!!

I would call the freezemark company to find out as their technique may differ a little from another. I would think it would be fine to lunge. My horses in on her shoulder, she's had it for years now but it did change the pigment of the skin from black to pink and I have to watch it in the summer for sunburn!

H had the recommended 7 days off. He could of been ridden before but he was in a riding school then and did not want him to be !!! If I remember rightly if was ok after 5 days. Test before putting saddle on though !

Apply surgical spirit to it - it hardens and heals a lot quicker.

Well Bailey was freezemarked yesterday - what a carry on!! He bucked and kicked out like a mad thing! Was not a happy boy at all - have to say the lady from Farmkey was lovely, very kind and patient with him despite hooves flying around her!!! Would totally recommend them. This morning he is sore, and has just a huge swelling all around where he was marked, nothing is visible at the moment but apparently that is normal. 2 other horses on the yard done at the same time and they didn't bat an eyelid - heads in a bucket of feed the whole time! I think mine is just a sensitive soul... bless him!

You are better off having them freezemarked on the shoulder so that it is seen when being hacked out. Also you do not have to rest the horses.

Tbh it shouldnt hurt them so its more a reaction to the fuss than anything else...its more of an annoyance than a pain...Glad he's been done and nobody got hurt! xx
