My horse is normally very good with dogs, but we have a problem with one particular dog that terrifies him. The dog is kept on a farm which is on one of our main routes out of the village so there is no way to avoid it. Usually it is in its garden but some days, like today, it is loose at the edge of the road, barking at my horse and causing him to leap right across the road. All the way up to the farm my horse spooks, shakes, snorts in terror at meeting this dog. Its not just him either - this dog has the same effect on the other horses on our yard.
Just in case you're wondering what sort of dog is this monsterous beast that feasts on horses, it is........

a one-eyed chihuaha!

Sounds like you're setting me a challenge - I'm going out later to buy a pea shooter just to prove I can ride 1 handed up a road sideways and shoot a chihuaha in its good eye!
Actually it looks like its got a cateract in its good eye as well so I doubt it can see out of that one either.

If its still got its teeth chuck a large dog size jumbone over the hedge-that will keep it quiet for probably all day!!!!!

Do let me know what you choose to do! Rubber bone bash it to death or pea shooter target practice... and results! (aa h poor thing) I believe chihuahas have a very loud grown up bark!

Maybe something to give larynx paralysis?

I'm actually starting to feel sorry for the dog. He doesn't actually do anything apart from the odd bark so is it his fault that his very existence is enough to terrify a horse?

one of the ladies on our yard had to be picked up in yard managers car after falling off this morning after her horse bolted 4 miles home alone due to being chased by bloody dogs! the dog owner calmly walked away and didnt even go to her aid or to check if she was injured!!!

I thought if the dogs were on the road the owner could be reported to the police because 'they are a danger on the public highway'? Not sure about this but I have had trouble recently with a collie that leaps over the garden wall out onto the road and barks/chases my horse. I am very tempted to ride up there with the old horse and a hunting whip and try and give it a good crack.

I think in the case at Walder's yard or with your collie that would be very appropriate - but can you imagine the reaction if I rang the police to complain about a one eyed chihuahua frightening my horse!

Steph - hope your lady is ok. Sounds like a really frightening experience.

Tht is disgucting, not to check if she is injured and after his dog made her fall. Some people, I reckon all should be assessed before being allowed pets/children etc.

Please believe no criticism intended, but are you adding to your horse's fear by riding him differently past the dog? Any chance of getting him out with an older or unspooky horse and riding them both firmly (Probably very firmly) but quietly past the dog. Once he's done it once, it won't be so frightening.

I don't believe I suggested that I do ride my horse differently past this dog. It's meant to be a lighthearted post - Its not an issue for us. I just find it amusing that my horse is so frightened by a very small one eyed dog.

Any dog that is on a public highway or right of way must be under control at all times.

Simply report the dog to the police and the local district authority dog warden and they are obliged to take action.

Even if the dog is in the confines of the owners property and it creates a problem with passing horses the local authorities can use the environmental protection act (as ammended) to enforce the owners to keep it well aweay from the public highway.

My horse was brought down by a farm dog which continued to attack it while on the road. My horse was injured. I reported the dog owner to both the police and dog warden who both visited him and warned him of the consequences of allowing the dog to roam free.

My humble apologies - I clearly wasn't in a light-hearted mood when I replied. Don't be too hard on the dog, will you - imagine being that size AND only having one eye!

No problem. You're right about the poor dog - it is mean thinking evil thoughts about pea shooters when he's obviously had a hard life! It is funny though - its not just my horse, they are all terrified of him. I don't think they can work out what he is!

Before reporting them, could you not have a quick word with the owner? If that fails then report it to the dog warden!
