Hi everyone, I gave my horse a likit the other day as a treat but he ate it in less than 2 minutes:eek::confused: i swear horses are meant to LICK them, not Bite them?:p he just basically bit a massive chunk off, crushed the rest of the likit with his foot and ate the remains?! Believe it or not, he then started asking me for MORE!:P
how should i encourage him to slow down? i never knew that he was that keen on likits:p:rolleyes:

I dont think there is anything you can do to slow them down! My horse is the same, i did try him with the unlce jummys likits which lasted him a bit longer so you could maybe try that but i dont give my horse them often as they are just full of sugar and send him loopy

They are pure sugar, yuck yuck yuck. If you want to give him a treat to lick, try a himalayan rock salt or a swede hung up with string it will give him (and you) hours of entertainment trying to eat it.

Try an Uncle Jimmy's. One of our ponies gets through a lickit in less than 20 minutes, the first Uncle Jimmy's lasted a week, the second one looks good for about 3 weeks. Make sure the horse cannot push the like against anything.

I can never understand why people want to give their horses what's in effect a giant sugar cube? And then wonder why, when the horse eats the whole thing in a mad binge, gets a huge insulin bounce, and then grumpily demands more... I suppose if you believe the manufacturer's blurb, your horse is getting a tiny amount of minerals along with the massive amount of refined sugar, so it must be good ;-)

No different from a human eating an entire box of chocolates in one go.

Agree with the person who suggested a swede or a mineral block - something that a horse would eat naturally, that won't do their delicately balanced Large Intestinal microflora any harm :)
