Horse biting/nibbling at sides?

Anyone have any experience of horses biting at their sides? No broken skin, and I've checked for mites etc and skin is perfectly pink and healthy looking. The way she's scratching it's like there's an itchy spot but it happens so often that I don't think it is, and when I do scratch it there's no reaction. This is done whenever said horse gets the chance to.

Mine does the same pretty much the spot where the girth buckles would do up, if i scratch him there he pulls lovely faces, i think it is from being rugged and not being able to have a good old scratch, i give mine a good brush.

My mare has been doing this for the past couple of months. Like you I have had a good look and there seems to be nothing amiss. I notice it is in the parts where she isn't clipped so it may be to do with that and being rugged.
