Horse bolting on the road some ideas please?

My exracer has done this a few times to me, not nice and definitely knocks the confidence!! Especially when it's not everytime as you sit waiting, which can make things worse!! One time he flung us into a ditch!! He's ok if everything's quiet but obviously roads are so unpredictable!! This one day we had a combine, few tractors, many cars, horse and trap and a load of deer running out! Can't blame him really but when he's like that, you just can't reason with him! Moving him to a yard with 14kms of off road hacking!! This will cause probs in itself as lots of grass tracks but at least there will be no vehicles about to crash into!! Hopefully we'll work through it!!

Oh yes putting you in a ditch I know that one very well I'm glad I'm not the only one having these sort of problems so I can bounce ideas off others for things to try. Hope your boy gets better, horses who'd have them ;)

We have a tractor so may beg the owner if I can ride round it she does see these everyday and very close so is it better to walk round it or to 'chase it'
Will she be allowed at a show I was told I wouldn't be able to if we couldn't get her to stop kicking it's generally at other horses and if they get to close now a days but she has gone to double barrel people before. I really wanted to do this as I thought it may help drop her in at the deep end type of way but worried it could back fire sorry I'm putting ideas down before trying when I asked for help just so worried she is going to hurt someone.
Thank you

When she kicks out at other horses or people - what do you do about it?

I haven't read all the replies but I've had 2 which have reacted badly to noise. One had a bad back - muscle damage, which was made much better by acupuncture. I found later that a glucosamine supplement was making her worse. The other was found to have quite severe food intolerances. In your case OP, I'd cut everything except hay & grass out of her diet and take it from there.

I got told move her away make her stand and try again this has worked for me as trust has built but with other horses it is only as they get to close I.e right up her bum. I tell other people not to lead her because it is only when I am not there to which I found someone sprayed her with the hosepipe which undid all my work with that. Or if they spook her and she is pulled back as she kicks and goes but hasn't done it since I moved to new yard she is just very bolshy and drags them around if they try leading her but they pull her up make her stand and start again

If I were you and being perfectly honest I would move to a place with a school on site. I would opt for 24/7 turnout, and would broached the road subject after a summer of schooling and taking her out hacking off road, assuming she loads and travels that is?
My friends horse is similar, not so bad, I spent two weeks with a steady nanny shielding him from traffic, this was light traffic, and he wasn't completely happy, then owner took him out and fell off off roar but horse ran for home across a road and hit a car. He hasn't been on roads since as I for one don't want to find out how the accident affected him. It's safer for everyone and he's happy.

I agree have been thinking for a while about moving to the yard where we can use the school. But it's only a walker in winter instead of turn out. She loads and travels fine so that is always an option. I am trying to prevent so only ride out with the steady horse and take her off as quick as I can would hate for anything to happen to her. Hope he was ok

Horse was fine the driver almost wasn't. So it's always such a risk and knowingly going on the road with a horse Thant is as bad as yours sounds, is irresponsible. Horses are never 100% but anything les than a solid 90 I reckon takes careful planning of timing of rides and routes etc.
Sounds like your in for a difficult time on the roads. Hope you find a place that suits.

Your horse sounds a little similar to mine. Same size, breed and also nervy in heavy or fast traffic.

I just wouldn't dream of trying to ride mine on a road such as you have to, unless we had bombproof company, and on a quiet Sunday morning!

My mare is much better in scary situations if I lead her, but again, I wouldn't dream of doing that on the road if I thought there was the chance she'd get away from me.

Would your mare be OK if another person walked or cycled next to her/in front??

Again, not good if she's going to kick them!

I would definately look to move yards - but one with winter turnout and quiet lane hacking or even better, offroad, if at all possible.

Having read all the replies, unfortunately I think the most sensible thing is to move her to a yard with a school, off-road hacking and a lot of turn-out. At the moment you are in a vicious circle of not riding her enough and then always taking her on the very busy road which is both dangerous for everyone involved and winds her up a lot. If you had the option of a school/off road hacking you could get her more used to listening you, expend some of her energy and get in control in a safe environment. You could then gradually re-introduce quiet roads and take it from there.

Thank u for all the replies defiantly think a yard move is probably in order just to find one now and my instructor is quite happy to help with the things suggested. Going to be a long time but hopefully even if not 100% bombproof she will at least be safe on the road.
