What do you know about horse brasses?

I have one that was given to our family 40 years ago and I want to clean and condition the leather. I have no idea how old it is but it is lovely.

I have a very old one too, lovely. I just use the old fashioned bar saddle soap at regular intervals on the leather, but don't clean the brass too often, I quite like it when it's not brilliantly shiny.

They had something to do with acting off evil spirits back in the day I think. There's quite a lot on line about them and what they mean.

I believe they were supposed to be lucky for the harvest time, hence worn on a false martingale around harvest time.
I bought several and made up 2 false martingales to mount them on as a present for someone, they do look nice when all polished up.

They were designed to ward off the "evil eye", which apparently, rather like me, is easily distracted by bright, shiny things.

Other than that, nothing really!
