Hi I love this forum so thought would ask your advice. I have posted on her a few times ?. So had my horse about 4.month now. And all has been going great the last couple of months shes more settled and I am more confident with her too. I hack out 2/3 times a week on my own with her and my friend on the yard rides her in a group at the weekend. Anyway today there was some horse in front of us and I could tell she was getting excited so we went a different way till they had gone. I found a little field to take her for a little blast. Soon as we started trotting she started bucking like crazy and tanking off with me. I eventually managed to stop her and as we got to the road I could feel she was still giddy and she started putting her head down and doing mini bucks on the road! so I got off. And walked her till she calmed down. Then after 10 mins of walking I got back on and we did our usual ride and she was fine. Did I do the right thing ? I feel like I have just got confident and now its knocked it again :( xx

It sounds as if you did the right thing at the time, you got back on and ended on a good note so think of it as a success.

My first thought on reading your post was how is she at the weekends hacking in a group and is it possible that your friend is encouraging her to be excitable with the others, if she is very confident, young or possibly enjoys showing her riding skills on a 'tricky' horse she could be doing more harm than good by exercising her for you, I would have a word and find out more as it sounds to me as if something about seeing the other horse set her off which shouldn't happen if she is generally good and used to being ridden in company.

I would also see if you can find someone sensible to ride with sometimes many horses are more relaxed in company, as are the riders, mixing up the routes, where you canter, avoid 'blasts' in the same place, think of hacking as an opportunity to build trust, try to 'school' for some of the time on each ride to keep her brain occupied not just her body, it will all help your confidence and give you the skill to handle the various hazards you will encounter.

Yes you did the right thing. You got back in one piece. Confidence is a fragile thing, so preserve it as much as you can, even if that means just walking for now, or even leading when you need to. Echo above, what’s she like when ridden by someone else? It’s possible that she’s just being taught that hacks are exciting. Are you having lessons on her? If not look into finding a patient instructor that can give you the tools to be more in control.

Hi thankyou for your replys. I have thought this about her hacks on a weekend but I thing the good outweighs the bad really. As when I first got her she was nappy and spooking and really trying it on. But since I have been riding her on her own and my friend taking her out she has been so much better. I have been on one of there hacks with them and they do have a little blast. But they also walk a lot and do a little trotting. She is generally a bit more excited hacking in company when I went I couldnt really enjoy it as didnt feel confident when they do have there little blast. And definitly dont want her sending that. She rides with the other others ok the yard.she is also overweight and is so much better with regular exercise. I took her out this morning just for a little plod to.our usual ride she was a bit on her toes but she was fine. We had a little canter on bridle path and she was great. I wasnt sure about riding as really ache from yesterday but felt of I didnt I might keep putting it off ! X

I also forgot to add she hasnt been feeling her best lately I think she has had mild colic as stomach was swollen and a little sensitive to touch and also some hay was put in field ( no on haylege) she has a dust allergy so her breathing wasnt great. ( I did contact vet ) any way after a few days she was feeling much better and I can tell she does too. So that might have something to do with it ? X

Think she was possibly just excited. There was something in the air last weekend. My normal sensible rock solid out hacking mare decided she wanted to keep up with the horse in front. She hadnt been out with this horse for a while. We were trotting and went up a patch of grass. Freinds horse took off up the road, mine decided it was time for a good buck. After dumping me she bogged off after her freind.
Sometimes these things happen. Just glad I was on grass
