Horse budget help - M and M performance pony?

At the end of summer, I'll be in a position to look for a new horse, but still not sure about the price? It would be a once in a lifetime chance to get something well schooled, with a decent record and no desire to kill its rider, and it's really not a type I've looked for before.

So, must haves -

Registered Welsh D or Connie, 14-14.2, 5-7 years, jumping well at 80 with scope to move up, scoring 60+ at prelim with potential to go to Novice, schooled cross-country, excellent to hack alone, fine with all traffic, good to travel, no lumps, bumps or illnesses.

Be nice to have -

Been hunted, hunter trialed or ODE, smart enough to show M and M WHP at agricultural level, can hack out nicely with others.

Don't mind -

Forward going, strong ride, occasional buck or plunge from excitement.

I haven't started going through ads yet, but what would you expect to pay? And where would be a good place to start looking?

I would say connie everytime !! But I love connies & would choose them over a lot

we used to sell things exactly with that description didnt have bucky moments weren't particularly strong xc either all in snaffles for between 5 & 6k anything a little more talented was 7k ish

I was looking for the same a month ago and was told I would need £5000 to ££6000!!

I have now taken my boy off the internet and am keeping hold of him instead as he has done/is exactly what you describe but only 13.2hh so I'm going to squish him a bit longer!!!!
 
Connies are very fashionable at the moment so will be expensive compared to a welsh section which are plentiful but can be more spirited.

A new forest might also be an option as being a less fashionable breed you would get more for your money.
 
I would guess you would get a good pony of that type for about £3-5000 I tried to sell my young highland who does all that but is only 13.3 for £2000 with no takers so god only knows whether the people advertising for the big prices ever get them or as usual I am unlucky and dont get any interest
My Welshie was sold for £3500 she was 15hh and everything you ask for by a friend who bought her from me she was 11 at the time
My Connie I recently sold valued at £4000 she is 146cm and is doing all of your requirements she is 7 this year
So I guess you need a fair budget but you will probably find a bargain or two around just dont discount anything until you have seen and tried it as there are some excellent ponies being sold for peanuts as people lose jobs and become in financial difficulties and you could get a real gem of a welsh D for under a grand
 
Agree £5-6k. I paid £4k just before. Christmas for. 15.1 sex

County showing. Won equifest m&m
But doesn't jump yet as old owner didn't
Perfect temperament. In fact a saint
She is very forward safe and sensitive
 
I got my welsh D (OK years ago) who does all the above for £900 He was only 4 at the time, but he wasnt really a challenge and just did everything asked no problem, but with a typical cheeky welsh attitude!!!

He's one in a million : )
 
I love connies but never had one but rode section ds when younger. I ended up with a NF pony because most people l knew had section b or ds & connies were abit more pricier. It depends what you are wanting to do but from experience connies are good allrounders particularly for hunting whilst section ds are good at showing & dressage again good allrounders. Anyhow, when my pony passed away l got an ISH as l wanted something different but ended up getting another NF straight of the forest from a vendor l choose them because they are so hardy, willing & so trainable. They are brill for all members of the family & don't tend to have too much trouble healthwise. They are also much cheaper than other natives & more people are starting to buying NFs nowadays. All the NFs l've had have been so loyal & the cheekiest characters like most ponies in general. Enjoy searching for your next equine whatever bree you decide on.
 
If you look at connie have a look at Clifden Sales in Ireland - www.cpbs.ie also Clifden Show in August you will see ponies advertised for sale that are actually performing on the day.
 
Hmm, you've given me a lot of food for thought. I was thinking around 6k, so not too much of a shock, but I'd never considered Forests. I was lucky enough to be owned by a crazy Connie mare in my youth, who jumped up to 1m tracks before age caught her and my uncle used to let me hack out his D show stallion and they were fab horses.

Off to check the breed site and the sales page.

My 148 Connie would nearly be a fit for what you are looking for.. He is however silly and spooky at timed but no badness.. I bought him for 4.5 k, I've already been offered 6k for him but not for sale at moment.
 
I love Connies, have had mine nearly four years since he was just turning five. Was just recovering from a badly broken leg and wanted something quiet and easy, he is! Has the odd spook but nothing silly. Got him from Red Lane Equestrian, she is fabulous...! My boy was exactly as described and had been under saddle a couple of months. Look her up on facebook she brings them over from Ireland and the unbroken ones are a reasonable price.
 
If you're not too fussed about jumping big then a highland pony would also tick all your boxes. Generally very easy sensible ponies but a fit show highland is great fun.
 
Connemara pony sales report for yesterday:

Very satisfactory sale today. Over 80% clearance, definitely a increase in quality and prices at today's sale. Broken & ridden geldings sold from €1550 to €3000. Unbroken 3 & 4 year old geldings fetching from €900 to €1250. Improvement in filly and mare prices also with yearling & 2 year old fillies from €350 to €1000. Nice quality yearling colts from €450 to € 775. From a catalogue of 169 lots, 123 passed through the sales ring with 89 were sold. 17 heading to France , 16 to the uk , 15 to holland and 9 to Belguim with the remainder sold around Ireland. There was definitely an air of positivity around today's sale. The next sale takes place over 2 days on Saturday 17 & Sunday 18 May.
