horse bums and cars

Keep your leg on, and flex his nose towards the car, so that he is bent round your leg (on the side of the car).

I carry a schooling whip (very long one) to tap (and i mean tap, not smack) the bum back over, since my share likes to suddenly swing his back end out at junctions sometimes. As above, also turn the nose in. And get back and saddle checked if it happens a lot. You could also try to get him more used to cars passing in a safe environment, as it sounds as though he is not very confident about it at the moment.

My second pony used to do this, it used to scare the hell out of me! He was also scared of anything and everything ( so couldn't use a schooling whip) The journey back to the yard (when he refused to get back in the trailer one day from a show) was the worst thing ever :( It put me off riding on the roads and to this day (approx 20 yrs later) i'm still s**t scared of riding on the roads.

But i found that keeping my inside leg on him constantly kept his bum from swinging round too much. But i also used to climb up onto high banks and he also jumped a very wide ditch from stand still  and there was no way back (fence the other side) so i had to jump back again from stand still. I BSJA'd him shortly after :D
