Well today has gone from awful to amazing!! The owner of the horse I ride told me today shes definately selling him, we've been doing really well together so I was gutted, went home crying and my mum (I'm 22) has offered to buy him for me!!!! I need to go to work but I've got a few questions:

* Firstly how much do you think he's worth? He's a papered Welsh D gelding, 7 Y/o but green for his age, he had only done w/t on a hack before I started riding him in spring but since then hes been doing great! Got 66% in his first dressage (prelim) has placed/won at both jumping comps we did 2'6" and is jumping up to 3'0" at home. He's lovely natured but really struggles with cantering on the right leg, he will only do it after a jump or very occasionally on the flat! His owner is asking £2300 including full tack wardrobe (all good quality, inc a sabre bridle and decent saddle) is this reasonable?

* I've had horses for full loan before in the past so I'm fine looking after a horse, but I'm moving abroad for 5 months of this year and would need to either loan him or put him out on cheap grass livery (I have friends/family who could check on him regularly) does anyone know anywhere suitable in the manchester area?

I'm soooo excited!! Thanks!

Hi,
I bought a 5yr old version of yours who struggled with canter but hadn't really done any jumping. We paid £1900 for him with no tack. I would say that is a very reasonable price and you have the plus point that you already know that he is good.
What is he like, height and breeding wise? :)

How exciting!

Provided he has a nice temperament, the price sounds fair. Although you've known the horse for a while, it's still worth getting a full vetting done just to be sure and to make certain the right canter is a training issue and not a physical problem.

Sounds like a good deal but as said above go for the vetting. I would go for a loan option if i was you as if hes green it would futher his schooling.:)

Thanks guys!! That was going to be one of my other questions, how much is a 5 stage vetting?

I've known and ridden him about 6 months in which time he has never been lame. Also he hasn't had any issues in the past as his current owners bought him from a sale as a yearling.

I'm glad you think it's a pretty good deal, heres some pics of him http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=175543&id=507712114&l=e55ea3cda7 I think he's a stunner but I think i'm a bit biased! :D

My advise is only about the loaning issue while you are away for 5 months. I would find a grass livery for him and not a loan home. You will not be there to check on him in a loan home and anything can happen in 5 months. I am trying to buy a horse at the moment and I have already bumped into one young lady trying to sell me a horse that I found out was only loaned to her.

Lovely boy, very pretty!!!

I would still get him vetted. The vet is a professional and might see things we would all have missed and the vetting asks questions you would not normally ask, like flexion tests and trotting on the hard in a small circle, which can reveal future problems. I haven't had one done in 3 years but I imagine it would be about 200-300 pounds? Money well spent though and you may need the certificate to insure him.

Just a tiny thought from seeing the pics. What is he like to ride in a snaffle? If you ever want to to dressage he would have to be in some kind of snaffle.

He's in a snaffle now, and fine in it to jump and on the flat. That was from his first show when I just rode him in what he was used to, I recon he may need the pelham back for XC but that wouldn't be a problem!

I got the price down by £100 to £2200 and had a look on some for sale sites and it seems reasonable. I've arranged to have him vetted tomorrow afternoon, £203 for a 5 stage, is that fairly reasonable? I got 3 quotes of £199, £203 and £224 so i think its ok!

I also emailed his breeder and his sire is the last one on this page Morlena Caleb http://www.morlena.co.uk/2.html, he seems to be bred fairly well but not amazing, but as i'm not into showing i don't really think that matters!

I have EVERYTHING crossed for this vetting tomorrow!!!

Fingers crossed for the vetting. He looks a lovely chap and you might have yourself a bargin :) Vetting price is normal too.
