Hi looking for some advice on a calmer for my horse. He is a 12 year old TB who is generally very laid back and dopey but can get het up and spooky out of the blue, he also rears when he has an aversion to something or gets excited. This behaviour is generally pretty rare but has been more frequent recently. I would put it down to the time of year, limited turn out/work and the influence of his high maintenance neighbour which He seems to have picked up some stressy behaviour from. Eg kicking the door and nodding head over the door. I want a calmer to help level his mood out and make him more settled but I don't want it impact his 'ooomff' when I ride him, I don't want him to loose his spark and get lazy, just want him to stop getting so tense and stressy at times. Any ideas?

I used to have my TB who was 12, and spooky on Horse First Relax Me, I would recommend it to anybody as I found it really worked for us. However now that my boy has to be on a joint supplement too it got too expensive and he is on the Equine America Magnitude, which is a great price and really seems to be working, however I believe only really works on horses with a magnesium imbalance.

All horses react differently to different calmers but those are the two that I have tried and work. They take the edge of him and he is happier and therefore so are we :). He is still forward and still spooks thats just his nature, but he is so much less tense in general, and his spooks are less often and not as sharp and nasty.

I also use equine America magnitude, I do find it takes the edge off my nervous pony. I did start using hypona last winter when less turnout seemed to make him have nervous energy and I did find that it worked but it's also quite expensive so switched to magnitude and seems to do the trick. I was going to stop giving it in the summer but have heard such good things about magnesium in the diet that I've carried on using it all year through.
