my horse came in from the field with a swollen leg i think he got it from knocking my fence down and escaping what shall i do?? do i call vet or anything i can do to avoid vet bills

Is he sound? Does he have cuts and where are the swellings?
If in doubt personally I would call the vet. Certainly if he has puncture wounds, heat, or is lame I would get a vet.
If he is sound and you genuinely think that he has just bruised himself then see how he is in the morning. I would cold hose tonight.
As for avoiding vet bills - is he insured? If you have a horse you will have vet bills;)

If he is lame and his knee is swollen and he went through a fence I would check carefully for any small (tiny) wounds - wounds over joints need urgent treatment. If he is still lame in the morning I would definitely get the vet.

Def get him chacked out in morning, I rode my 15yr old mare last sunday she was kickinng trailer little as getting tacked out but hacked fine several hours loaded 10 mins home had job to get out trailer back right vets x rayed been out 3 times now still swollen above hoof going to xray scan friday again and was thinking of taking insurance off early march, when insuance ran out, phoned upand still going to renew. cheque in post, so better afe than sorry.

With it being on a joint my thoughts are always to call the vet, my tb filly came in with a slice on her knee tonight, quite newly done, not deep but wasnt sure, she's had to have it stitched so glad I did. It didnt look too bad.

Ditto the puncture wound check carefully anything small and infection can set in which could be causing swelling. Hope horse is ok tomorrow.

We have just been through a problem like this with our 17'3 hunter.
He was turned out came in and leg was swollen.
I would get the vet out as he may need antibiotics ours did and had to be on box rest.
We found a tiny hole and this had caused all the problems, oh and we also had xrays done to make sure there was nothing else going on.
