horse can't be tied up

Hello,
My young horse is become a right pain!. She can stand tied up quite happily, but the moment she gets bored or fed up she simply leans back, breaks the headcoller/rope/twine and then wanders off. There is no panicing or stress involved, it is very matter of fact and doesn't worry her at all.


Any ideas on curing this problem? I really want to compete her but won't trust her to stand patiently in a lorry or event ground at the moment.

Samba just wouldnt tie up. Did what yours did all the time.

So this is what I did.


You need a rope halter (more pressure) If you can source one seen quicker results with Richard Maxwell halter.
Lunge line
tie ring
a whole morning/ afternoon and a book


Dont tie her but thread lunge line through tie ring/ hoop sit down out of sign but being able to see her. I sat in my stable. Keep hold of lunge line. Let her pull back, let her think about it, then gently reel lunge line back in to where you started. She will soon learn that it gets a bit boring and she gets no where. It took me 9am-1pm with Samba though, but patience is a virture and all that.


Our latest trick is to undo the knot Grrr!!!!

Yup, put a long rope on her as well as her usual rope, tie her up as normal and run the long rope through the tie ring and just hold on and wait. When she goes to pull back and free herself give her a nice hard yank on the rope.

Or you can substitute the loop of twine for a bicycle inner tube, it will stretch and not break.

I would do the above with adult horse with the habit.

Inner tyre with yearlings yes, but not strong enough for mature horses. Plus potential for uprooted stable panels, fences and sore polls.

This is what I did to mine, but I used his normal head coller. when she goes to run back hold on and ask her to walk on towards you. AS SOON as she takes a step forwards release the pressure and praise her. It took my boy the sum total of 20mins to tie up and not run off. Before that we would get through 3-4 leadropes a week!
