Need to pick your brains a bit on the above, as to which you think would be the best charity to donate a lump sum to, or a few various ones where the money can be split between them, charities where you do genuinely know the money goes to good cause and straight to the care of the horses in this case.

My great auntie has bless her has given 40k to The Donkey Sanctuary and 40k to the RSPCA (but then chose a specific area in the country for it to be used) I'm not great lover of the RSPCA...well more the ways about things but hey that's another story, anyway back to the point and will be donating further money to other animal charities including an equine one which I'd like to suggest to her but on recommendation, she can't really go out to visit these places to see for herself as she's in her 90's so that's not really possible if anyone suggests that idea, which would be good if she could.

Please no comments regarding giving to animal charities rather than those that benefit people, she's very much into giving to animal charities and would be offended/upset if we were to suggest anything else, think typical stubborn old lady :D

Suppose I'd just like some ideas thrown my way if you see what I mean.

The Horse Rescue Fund in Norfolk.

They've been going for fifty years or so, and they gathered the evidence for various campaigns/acts to improve transportation for horses to the continent, for riding schools and for ponies (The Pony Act of 1962, I believe). The majority of their horses are rehomed, often for riding (one was at my old riding school, others were well known on the local circuit), and they only have a handful of longtermers. They're great people, and they don't get the same fuss as the larger charities, just quietly do what they've been doing for fifty years.
 
I have no suggestions being in the States but just wanted to say that she sounds like a wonderful, generous lady.

I always hate it when people make those sort of comments, as if having compassion for animals means you have no compassion for people. Usually the people making them aren't lining up to donate money to anyone, in my experience.
 
I would have said The Brooke too but then to be honest there are so many horse charities these days it's hard to choose isn't it! Theres WHW as well who do a great job -ooh it's hard isn't it!

I think it's down to the individual as to who or what they donate their money to - I'd probably be more inclined to donate to animal charities than human charities, i don't know why it's just me I guess. I'd rather some of my tax went towards human charities if needs be - or more the lottery fund money etc etc.
 
I would give to The Brooke too, if I had money to give away. The other option is to think of smaller horse charities which don't get much money, eg Heartbeat Home of Rest.

Its often the smaller ones that get forgotten - they have tiny balance sheets and even smaller funds in which to pay their paid staff (whom of which are essential for the day to day running - they can't only have unpaid volunteers)....they don't get any funding besides those money they work hard raise themselves, and especially don't have the budget for the big marketing campaigns - and are SO grateful for every penny they can get.

Hopefully a new better strangles vaccine soon and this organisation will have a big part to play if exotic diseases arrive in UK
 
Just a quick thank you guys for your all your info/suggestions, had to log off yesterday so didn't get chance to reply and read through the links but thank you I'll take a look today. :)
