My horse "coughs" or clears his throat a couple of times at the beginning of every ride (once trot & canter work has started) he's fine in every other aspect - heathly, lively ect.
So was just wondering what it could be - its fairly dusty/sandy here so could it just be that?
Is there anything I should give I.e supplements ect?
Or am I just being overly "motherly" :o
Thanks :D

I think this is perfectly normal. My horse does this, like just clearing her throat. A few people have said its just after they havent done much and you ask them to trot or canter, a bit of the stuff settled in their airways needs shifting.
Dont think its anything to worry about :)

Mine does it if she's had time off work. She's completely fine & stops after a few days! Think it's her clearing her throat/chest!

My old boy used to cough twice in the first five minutes of a ride, you could set your watch by it, thereafter he was fine.

Traddie bloke does it too: tho' he does a more dramatic/noisy version - think whale blowing its spout rather than discreet cough. We live near a main road and have to cross it over a bridge very often - and he always has a good old cough and blow about that; think mebbe he's a bit affected by the fumes??? Poor old lad.

we use Feedmark Clarity free phone 0800 585 525 get good advice and products are herbal our horse was left with a cough after a bad chest infection she had vet treatment ,and then we used the clarity for a while ,they sent us a free sample , so we were sure horse would eat it ,they are very quick to send order,it sorted the cough and the horse loved it.I hope this helps.

My 13yr old mare coughs in the first 5 mins of our hacks. Just one or two coughs and a snort then all ok for rest of ride. Think there's nothing to worry about mine doesn't cough rest of time and hasn't any nasal discharge.

Try them on cider vinegar (in their feeds) for a few months and let me know how they go on, my lad stopped doing this when I put him on it along side his feed at christmas :)

Mine does this when he's been stabled - think he has a mild dust allergy. My pony will also do the odd one or two at the beginning of a ride. I have used that Lincoln Koff Syrup for my horse and that seems to relieve it - plus he seems to like it. I actually just open the lid and squeeze some in to his mouth. He will actually sort of 'ask' for it. Wish they'd design the bottle though so you could squirt it in to the mouth easier. it can get messy otherwise and there's no way I can feed my horse a tablespoon of it!

As someone mentioned feedmark as well I will agree with them being extremely efficient delivering!

Yeah a few tend to do it on our yard at this time of year, Leo included, I think it's being stabled for longer with the dusty straw, we spray the hay so that helps to minimise the coughing :)
Don't worry unless he's coughing more when not ridden
